cravat preferences

Am also glad to see other guys who like cravats. I like the floulard prints and also plain, raw silk materials with a heavy thread. The latter stays in place better and looks good with a conservative stripe or patterned shirt. Anyone else agree?

Awesome thread! Hope it comes back to life though... I picked up two different 100% silk ascots back in the summer months,one is red w/ tiny black polkadoted ROBERT TALBOLTT brand,the other is a forest green w/red & goldish paisely patterned TIE RACK brand.Both are in new/like new condition and under $2 each. Last Friday I finally worked up the nerve to wear the red ascot to work(expecting to be teased,etc.),in place of a tie.ZERO negative comments or jests were thrown my way! Any comments given me were positive! One friend/coworker even said it looked "suave and debonair"! Ascots seem to bridge the gap between dress casual and dressy,and,imho,are an excellent accessory.

I would be interested in finding places online that still sell ascots.

Brooks Brothers, a high-end men's retailer in the US, stocks them. But, they're wanting for style and variety in my opinion. The ones they do have on would look good with a tweed jacket or camel hair because of the tone.

The only one I do have is from a friend who makes them. I'm a bit of a cheater because the loop is already sewn in

Grantway, must have read my mind. Foulard prints you can't go wrong with, and a heavy thread does indeed make it easier to "hold"

Yes....I like heavy thread ones. Now have a couple of Thai silk cravats in plain colours. I also have a 'loop' cravat that is easy to secure

Not a bad idea there. Seems like I was "stuck on stupid" trying to correctly tie and fit my ascot the first time I wore it. Even after watching several youtube videos--"tie it like a tie!", "no! tie it like an ascot."...Classic case of "trying to hard" and also (for me at least)the legitimate bit of a learning curve for something slightly outside of my comfort zone.

I picked this one up at a local thrift store yesterday for a whopping $3.00. I was pleased, I seldom find anything worth buying there.

And lets face it, cravats are notoriously wayward things: regardless of knot or pin, they seem to have a life of their own.

Amazing collection, Two Types!!! Yes - ascots/cravats tend to have a life of their own. That's why I vey often use a short silk scarf instead. Like this one:

Rather than reading and running, I just thought I'd stop long enough to say 'hi', and to thank Two Types for guiding me to this thread.

I’ve not been a big fan of wearing ties for a number of years, but I’m getting to the stage of life where I feel I ought to ‘tidy myself up a bit’. I like vintage clothing and have acquired a couple of sports jackets. I have also stumbled over cravats.

I’ve bought a couple of Tootal cravats off EBay, which I’m waiting on delivery, and I'll certainly be posting up my acquisitions when then arrive. Also I hope that you'll forgive any blisteringly noobie-stoopid questions I'll no doubt ask

Got a question. All though I own a fair amount of cravats, I am still searching for something like this:

Edward Fox also wore a striped scarf/ascot in the opening scene of Battle of Britain (the movie).
I don't know if they are cravats, scarves of squares - but how do I get hold of such things?
If ebay - what are they called? Any online shops? ....I am gettin' crazy!!!!

Edward Fox went to Harrow School, and a quick search of Google Images has revealed that those are indeed the Old Harrovian Colours.

Sadly I’ve a feeling that the school and its old boys would take a dim view of you sporting their colours if you’re not in the club.

I have no intention of doing the look-a-like thing - any other colors will do nicely, thank you - it's the style I am after. The striped cravat/scarf/square - whatever it's called...

I'm quite excited today, as my new purchases arrived at the office.

Both are labelled Tootal, and feel very comfortable. I have a feeling I'm going t enjoy my cravat/ascot wearing
