I hear you, I was also disgusted with modern products. Which was how I got started collecting vintage razors. I think you'll be shocked by how much better they actually work than the the expensive cartridge blades.

This razor uses standard single edge blades which are readily available in most drug stores or online, and are relatively inexpensive. Double Edge razors such as the vintage Gillettes use even more readily available blades. You should be able to find them at most any drug store for somewhere between 20¢ and 50¢ apiece. They are even cheaper online. You can get 100 Derby double edge blades at Amazon for $8 with free shipping.

The Gem Micromatic is a wonderful razor, that will give a really good close shave, but it's a little less forgiving than some of the other options. I might recommend a Gillette Double Edge razor for a first safety razor, especially if blade cost is a primary consideration.

I got into shaving with vintage instruments about a year or so ago and haven't looked back - just be prepared to have a rough (and pink-tinged) learning curve.
