Just ordered a Sydney in Regency Fawn from David Morgan. Excited to get it as it will be my first new felt hat. All others have been vintage.

You picked a great place to start.
You can't go wrong with Akubra. I have eight now and they are all great!

Let us know how you like the Sydney.

I finally got around to posting some pics of my Campdrafts on the Campdraft thread (link below), and here are my other Akubras - a Plainsman and a Lightning Ridge...

I'm a Brit and I moved to Australia about six months ago. You definitely need some good hats here - especially if you're a slaphead with pale blue skin, like me

I bought an Akubra Warrego too which I'm planning to have altered with a wider ribbon, binding, and a curled brim edge. When I get it done I'll post some pics.

Where did you get the Warrego? I'd like one for the summer in Sand

Well, my Sydney arrived a few days ago. It was a little delayed because of the storm Seattle got. I don't know if I'm qualified for a review, but I will say that I really like it. It's not as soft as I expected it to be. It's held my dry bash just fine. Maybe it's just my bash, but it doesn't seem to have as much taper as I expected either. The sweatband is very soft and comfortable. Also, the color is a nice shade that can go from a dark brown to almost an olive green depending on the light. My only qualms is a small blob of glue visible near the bow and the rear of the brim curls up a little too much for my usual tastes. But I'll take care of that with some steam.

This first picture is probably closest to the actual color, but like I said, I've noticed it shifts depending on the light.

Terrific Sydney. It looks good on you. All reviews are appreciated. I have a Sydney on order as well coming via Seattle. I was hoping it was a softer felt but the colour description sounds very promising. Nice avatar.

Looks good. You did a good job on the bash too. Did you put in a C-crown or a center dent.

I placed it back in early January but the color/style was out of stock. It has been shipped so I'm just waiting for UPS or whatever to pony up. I expect it tomorrow or Monday. If it doesn't arrive by Tues, I'm to email them.

I'm just impatient, that's all. I want to wear it to church along with my new burgundy AE's and silk boutonnière.

Well my new Sydney came in on Friday and I would have to say that your review pretty much nailed it garenb.

I find the hat's crown is very similar in texture and feel as the Christy's Foldaway I picked up from a fellow lounger. I was able to get it to hold a nice center crease and side dents without too much efort. It does however have a stiff snap brim which I like. Nice chocolate milk shade of brown. Not to much taper so I still get that vintage feel from the hat. Been wearing it around town the last few days and I am pleased with my purchase.

Here's a bad cameraphone shot of me in my carbon grey Akubra Sydney. It's my first good fur felt fedora and my first Akubra.

I ordered it from Cultured Cowboy in South Carolina. Not going to do that again. They seem like nice folks, but they were nearly unreachable by phone or email. When I did get in touch, they promised me my hat in 2-3 weeks only to have it take 6. They didn't have it in stock and had to order one from David Morgan, but I received no phone or email to let me know it was going to take twice as long. I just had weeks tick by until I finally managed to get through on the phone after a couple days worth of calling.

I measured at a 59 and ordered a 60. Good thing because any smaller would definitely be a problem. I may buy a hat stretcher just to make sure the hat doesn't shrink with wear. I dry-bashed a center dent for the first wearing and that worked fine. While I was making a Valentine's pasta dinner for my wife, I took advantage of the boiling pot to put in more of a c-crown which I like a little better. I've heard several people remark that the Sydney is very soft and doesn't hold a crease well. I've found that to be true, but I don't really have a problem with it. Both the felt and sweatband are much softer than the more expensive modern Stetsons I've tried on and about the same as a very nice (and more expensive) Biltmore.

As most people know, carbon grey is very dark. Unless you're in bright sunlight, it looks black. I probably won't wear it around the orthodox jewish side of my wife's family lest they give the Gentile a hairy eyeball.

I've gotten several compliments. A friend at church made the token Indiana Jones reference and my wife made a gangster joke, but I've had many more people tell me that it looks sharp. I certainly like it. Now I'm going to have to explain to my wife why I want to buy another in fawn. And maybe a similarly shaped panama.

Looks good on ya!! The crease and all works well with your head and face. I have the same color Sydney, the only one I have, and I agree about the color! Next one you order, order it from DM directly. You'll get it in about 3/4 days and if any problems with your order, they DO contact you. GREAT folks to deal with! I have since the early 70's and still do !!

@colby jack

I really like your adventurer! I just bought my first panama from panama bob! Now I am interested in a felt fedora I can wear out to dinner and to lodge. I have read here on FL about the hats y'all had out in the elements and I believe these are the arakars?

What I am looking for is a felt hat in the style of a fedora with a low crown lightweight that can stand up to the Texas heat and not make me sweat! I would graciously appreciate any help all of you great FL members could offer.

Best,
Jerry
