when do you guys wear a panama?

Hey guys i was wondering your view on panama and other light hats. We have had a super mild winter with multiple 60 degree days. Do you all wear panamas when the temp permits or follow a strict code like wait until march or something along those lines? Just curious!

I forgot to post mine. With how humid it gets felt is super uncomfortable above 70 or so that is when my panamas get their work

When I (hopefully) get a Panama, it'll be for all the hot and/or humid days. Roughly 25-30+ degrees C.

When it gets hot. If I can wear a tweed jacket than I will not wear a panama. Panamas go with linen and or shorts.

See that is part of my problem i have to wear dress slacks daily regardless of temp so i wesr a panama with seersucker shirt and dress slacks

That seems right to me. Seersucker definitely goes in the same category as linen.

Well, speaking of Panama or Straw, when it is warm out, I will wear one. I know there are some sort of "book or rules" regarding season and what to wear and all that, but I don't care about all that sort of stuff. If it is warm out, I will wear a Straw, and I have a few that are good to go with any clothing I would wear, be it a suit or jeans or shorts.

And on the topic of Panama hats, I am already on the look out for some deals on them, as Spring is on it's way and I want to make room for new hats, thus I am selling off some to make more room!

Hi

Just to be formal, Felt hat day (drop the straws and grab the bunny fur) is September 15th in the USA. Straw Hat day (sometimes called Boater Day) is May 14th or 15th. PERSONALLY I try to keep with the formal dates, but I did let Felt Hat day slip since it was still in the 90's here in Kansas in September. I'm usually good to go for Straw Hat Day, it's usually warm enough for that here.

It's usually up in the upper 70s to low 80s by the midle of April here in Texas so the felts get put up in their boxes and the Panama's come out till around October

Yep it does get warmer down South or out West faster than here in the North MidWest States.

I also know down in Texas, hats are a serious thing, and such as I have heard, "Don't mess with Texas"!

I wear Panama's and Milans when it gets in the 70's or I start sweating wearing a fur felt hat. What ever month it is. With the way the weather anymore is that could be any month.

I consider my 'thin ribbons' to be spring and fall hats, as most of them are fairly light weight felt anyway, and, the light-colored felt tends to reflect the sun and be cooler than dark 'winter' colors, so 'felt' season stretches into June and returns in September or thereabouts. I'm still wearing my cav edge fedora collection for now and if the warmer weather holds steady for maybe two weeks or more then they go back into their boxes until November and I'll break out the ORs, San Antonios, 'crossover' cowboy hats with 3 in brims, et cet. It has to be very consistently hot before I put away the thin ribbons and break out the straws.

The switchover is never a 100% thing, so there might be a couple of straws that see action in May or June before the thin ribbons are put away, and there will be one or two thin ribbons that remain available throughout the summer. So, I tend to 'feather' out the switch, moving a few hats at a time, but not adamant about doing them all on the same day.

The nearest I get to observing any formal dates are with my shoes: whites and co-respondents with white panels come out usually in March (normally St Patrick's Day, or whenever I finally find it warm enough that the Winter coats can be put to bed for the season. Back in the wardrobe those shoes go in mid September. Straw hats, purely by temperature. If it's too hot for felt, out comes the straw. Only wear straw out of necessity, though, as I far and away prefer felt.

I'm in northeast Florida.

riding the "Northeast Florida Weather Roller Coaster" changing hats by the weather temp is like doing a juggleing act with one hat on the head 3 in the air and one in each hand in constant rotation....

30 - 40 degree temp changes could be from day to day or even morning to night.
leave the house in low 40's.....mid 70's (couple of 80 degree days already) by 12:30...back down to mid 50's by 5:30.

Mostly felts but occaional milan or panama....Pretty much what i feel like wearing with whatever clothes I'm wearing....keeping in mind I don't have an extensive hat collection to choose from.

Won't be to many months and it will be definitely to hot for a felt hat.

Hi again

I do have a bone Buckaroo Hatters Rough Rider hat that gets Spring and Summer wear, when I don't think I'll sweat through it. I can't see having a dress hat with sweat stains, cowboy hat yes, Homburg no, white hats NO, nice Fedoras NOOOO.

Here in SoCal the May/September dates for changing hats is nonsense so it's a thermometer thing. If the high for the day is over 74F it's a panama day. Under that I wear felt. And if it's a panama day, it's a polo/golf shirt under a flyweight linen or cotton jacket. No ties above 74F!
