Here's the scoop that's being passed around. The new flick WON'T be a remake!

Ridley Scott to Direct Another ‘Blade Runner’ — It Won’t Be a Remake
By Joshua L. Weinstein, The Wrap | Movie Talk – 20 hours ago

Ridley Scott is returning to his roots, revisiting his definitive -- and beloved -- cyberpunk film "Blade Runner," for Alcon Entertainment.

Filmmakers haven't hired a writer yet, and are still figuring out what the story will be, producer Andrew Kosove told TheWrap Thursday.

"This is arguably the greatest science fiction movie ever made and we're not remaking it," he said. "It's a prequel or a sequel."

Alcon secured the rights to "Blade Runner" for prequels, sequels and other projects last March.

They knew then that they wanted Scott to direct.

Warner Bros. Extends Production Deal With Alcon 2 More Years

"I'm not saying we wouldn't have come up with a Plan B," Kosove, Alcon's co-founder and co-CEO, said. "But the idea was always to go right to Ridley and that's exactly what we did."

Having Scott attached "gives people a level of comfort about how serious we are," Kosove said.

Kosove said the movie's themes "are even more relevant today than they were almost 30 years ago."

The 1982 movie is about Rick Deckard, a "blade runner" played by Harrison Ford. His job is to terminate "replicants," or human clones who are bred to work.

"No one could have envisioned from a technical standpoint how quickly the world would advance over the last three decades," Kosove said. "The question is, 'What does it mean to be human? What does it mean to have humanity? ... Both as a philosophical matter and also as a narrative matter, there are lots of jumping-off points from 'Bladerunner' to make something that is inspired by 'Bladerunner.'"

Kosove said it'll be up to Scott to decide whether to invite Ford to return, but "I do not anticipate it."

Hollywood Seized by 3D Mania

He said he'd like to have the movie inn production in a year-and-a-half.

"There will be one more announcement we will make before we go dark for a while," he said. "We have to figure out who the writer is going to be and a general framework for the movie."

Alcon bought the rights from producer-director Bud Yorkin, who will produce the new film along with Alcon, Cynthia Sikes Yorkin and Broderick Johnson and Kosove. Frank Giustra and Tim Gamble, the CEOs of Thunderbird Films, will serve as executive producers.

Meanwhile, Scott is in postproduction on "Prometheus," a sort-of prequel to his classic 1979 "Alien," for Fox.

Deadline first reported the news.

I'd just read about this. My first reaction to the link was "OH NO, NOT A REMAKE!". Talk about a relief to find out the truth. Could be interesting, but in any event, let's have ONE version, not a theatrical version, director's cut, director's re-edited special edition cut, and so on.....

So, right now, all there is is the concept of doing a Blade Runner film? Nothing more than that?

Right. I just thought Prometheus was so enjoyable — returning to the world of science fiction was so fun — that I wanted to [go back to Blade Runner, too]. I’m also thinking about what the hell I might do for a Prometheus 2.

Do you think there will be one?

Sean Young isn't needed. The actress Greta Gerwig (who looks and sounds like Young) could easily play the role of Rachael.

I would love to see some kind of a sequel if it is well done. Bladerunner is easily one of my top favorite five films. However, as much as I would love another story, the original Bladerunner is such a beautiful and timeless film. The opening sequence is stunning. I can't imagine a modern day film coming close. And given the pure hell that filming the first version was, who would volunteer to work in those conditions? And without those conditions, would the film be nearly as good?

I've also always been fascinated by the story being left untold. I fear a sequel would try to answer questions that I think are best left to the audience to answer on their own.

All we can say for certain is this: we're in 2012, only five years away from 2017 -- yet it sure isn't raining much in downtown Los Angeles, Joan Crawford shoulders aren't back in style, and the Bradbury Building doesn't look like hell inside. Still, I'm hopeful.

A Blade Runner sequel without Harrison Ford though??,...I dunno,....The prequel to Alien sounds cool. Would possibly explain where the aliens came from and all.

Said with some humor and flair, "if you want to know where the Alien's originated, speak to my ex girlfriend, SHE has to be related to all of the, zoom, pow, off to the moon"!

Oh my, are you wanting the movie or in real life for those things to come about? (had to ask, spank me later)!

I don't know, I feel like the excessive advertisement part of it's coming true. ;)
Look at the new Google glasses. Piping advertisement directly into your eyes.

Someday I want to teach a course where I can incorporate Metropolis, Bladerunner, and Brazil into the curriculum. In my mind, those three films have similar themes. I first saw Bladerunner when I was taking a course on creation myths; I later saw Metropolis when I was taking a course on organizational theory.

Bladerunner is one of the greatest movies of all time regardless of genre. A prequel/sequel could easily go wrong in so many ways. I hope it will be good but I will remain nervous about the whole affair until proven otherwise. It is just too rare to capture lightning in a bottle a second time.

I love the soundtrack! Who could be a possible alternate these days?

Brian Eno for one...

Should've made the score for the original Blade Runner as well, IMO.

I find the Vangelis score both shallow and unbearably pompous.
Nearly as disgusting as the force-fed voice-over in the original version.

Thank heavens for the Directors Cut...
