This is a very nice example of a 1940s(?) Spanish 3-piece dinner suit, which I am selling somewhat reluctantly as I have decided that keeping a dinner suit which is somewhat too big for me when I am already trying to lose weight is not only folly but a counsel of despair...

At any rate, here it is:

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=150767619607&ssPageName=STRK:MESE:IT

An extremely fine vintage, possibly 1940s, Spanish-tailored 3-piece dinner suit ensemble, consisting of single-breasted one-button peak lapel jacket with silk facings, scoop-necked full-backed shawl collar waistcoat and single stripe evening dress trousers buttoned for braces. A true vintage formalwear classic.

Jacket to fit approximately a 42" chest (waistcoat appropriately slighly snugger at circa 40"), trousers 37 1/2" waist with upto 1" let-out, and 29" inside leg with upto 2" let-down. Please check with a well-fitting suit of your own before purchasing.

JACKET: single-breasted 1-button fastening with traditional 4" wide peaked lapels. Jetted pockets. 3-button cuffs. Ventless in the classic manner. Buttonhole to left lapel, nicely finished with a slanting edge. Lapels faced with a soft twilled silk with a nicer hand than regular grosgrain. 2 inside breast and one inside ticket pockets. Black satin twill lining to the body with cream and black cluster stripe lining to the sleeves. Traditional plain black buttons. Label to Derby of Bilbao.

External chest measurement 22" = c.42" chest

Length 31" from base of collar to hem

18" across shoulders

External waist measurement 21 1/2"

External measurement at base 23 1/2"

Inside sleeve measurement 17"

Outside sleeve measurement 25 1/2" (plus there appears to be some scope to take the sleeves down by possibly 2" if the buttonholes could be removed)

WAISTCOAT: Fully backed, shawl lapels around deeply scooped opening, pointed bottoms. 4-button front. Twin pockets, black satin twill back and back adjuster with bright blued metal buckle, cream/black striped inside lining to match sleeve lining of coat, including integral buttoned pocket. Side-vented for ease of access to trouser pockets.

External chest measurement 20 1/2" = c.40" chest

Length from top of shoulder to point 24 1/4"

Length at back 22 1/2"

External base measurement 21"

TROUSERS: dress trousers with single reversed pleats, single silk braid stripes down out-seams, smart on-seam pockets in the traditional manner. Self-striped cotton lining to waistband and subtle narrow satin trim to top of waistband. Button fly with unusual button & hook closure (also blued, marked the "Crown Hook"), including flap of lining material - a unique feature I have never encountered before. External brace buttons and slightly fishtailed back, plus side adjusters and neatly-finished contemporary belt loops (taking a "belt and braces" approach just that one stage further!). Front fob/change pocket plus buttoned rear pocket. Plain straight 20" bottoms neatly finished with reinforcing strips to heels and strips of satin lining twill (as to the jacket) at top of inner edge - a touch bespeaking of great care and attention to detail.

External waist measurement 19 1/4" = c. 37 1/2" waist, with about 1" let-out room

Leg outseam measurement 42", inside leg 29" with about 2" let-down

20" bottoms, 26" at knee.

This suit is just back from the drycleaners and is pleasantly fresh in consequence. I could see few if any faults; there are a few very very minor snags on the silk facing of the lapels and the left lapel has the appearance of a faint line down it, perhaps due to poor pressing, and the pockets seem to sag slightly when I try it on but perhaps that is a facet of the poor fit on me (the reason I am selling); other than that it looks very good.

By way of an inducement to forum members, I offer a 10% discount off both the final sale price and shipping cost, unless you buy it now, in which case I will offer 10% off FSP and a 25% shipping discount (or £5 off shipping, whichever is the greater.)

Thanks! I must admit it pained me a bit to decide to pass it on, especially as I had bought it expressly to replace my current c.1950/60s Burtons SB/PL dinner jacket, which rather pales by comparison but fits better...

Anthony, you excel yourself again Sir with the fine items in your collection. Being St.David's Day and following the marvellous last minute truncing of England at the weekend by the boyo's in Red, it seems fine timing that you release this marvellous three piece suit. Just a splendid piece that hopefully one of our members will get!

Thanks Paddy - my wife and daughter were delighted by the win, me (being an expatriate) not so much! It is a nice piece and I'd like to think of it going to a good home, and where better than a member of the Lounge! I've added a couple of pictures of the back of the trousers so that people can judge the possibilities of altering them. I also like the way that the raw edges have been bound with white thread and the seams covered - nice touches.
