1920s wardrobe basics

I've been searching for a thread like that and I haven't found one, so I thought I might start it.

I can't get over the beauty of those lingerie and clothes. Although on the screen other eras seem more impressive, when I saw a collection in a museum I was stuck in front of the 1920s section for a very long time! In person they are simply dazzling, not to mention very good taste.

I was wondering, what would a wardrobe consist of? I've already got the bob, what else would I need?

Some lively slips and dainty underwear obviously! The amazing gown (if I could of course). But for every day? I've been watching Clara Bow and Louise Brooks photos and films, but they are such a hard act to follow. Simply wonderful.

I can't tell you but I recommend a book. My girlfriend just got it and it is very heavy with many pictures and good explainations. Maybe the best book I have seen on the subject so far.

Don't be misguided by the movie stars, since they didn't wear the every day clothes that a woman in the 20's would own.
It's nice to dress up for an evening out, but they sure aren't wardrobe basics.
I also suggest books and especially Everyday Fashions of the 20's, since that was what woman could afford in that time period.

I second this! Same goes for the make up. Daytime for non movie stars was still on the very light side, but they had started wearing more lipstick!
Loads of cottons dresses and long sweaters are a good start on basics. Yes, the above book is a great start, as are old fashion catalogs from the era!

This is a great reference. I find that clothing catalogues of the day, that were bought by everyday people, are the best indicator of what was worn, how it was worn and the accessories that were available to go with it. But the book...it is great and keep an eye out for 1920s Sears and Montgomery Ward catalogues on Ebay.
