Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

I am trying to get up the courage to dress up in public.I live in a small rural town and I get so annoyed when I see all the people in rubber boots,pajamas and the like going around the streets.Especially pajamas.I had severe postnatal depression and two small kids but I still put pants on to leave the house!!
I take courage from you guys though and I realise we owe it to the next generation to show that there is an option other than 'whore' or 'soccer mom'.

Today I got: "You've got this whole Mad Men look going on. I like it." from a doctor.

I've never gotten a Mad Men comment before, although I know many ladies here have. I've never seen an episode of Mad Men, I'm pretty sure that wasn't the look I was going for, but I sure am flattered based upon what I do know about that series.

I went to my son's parents evening at school last week dressed as I usually do and with my white streak in a pomp (again, as usual these days). I felt slighly out of place and did worry slightly that my son, who's twelve, might have got the odd sarky comment about me afterwards, but the next day when he got home form school he said 'Everyone was asking me if I lived in a mansion because you look like Draco Malfoy's mum!'

He said everone thought his mum and dad were 'cool' as I look like Narcissa Malfoy and his dad looks like 'a circus strongman'! He does actually as he's bald with a large handlebar moustache.

"Handsome" as a term to describe a male is of more (relatively) recent usage. Traditionally it was a generic term to denote attractiveness. Read Jane Austen for example, the women and girls are frequently referred to as being "handsome" or "agreeable".

Given the gentleman's age I have little doubt that he meant no offence whatever, he was using a word he's probably always used!

A former workmate visited my job a few days ago. Since he quit my 40's style have developed and that day I had my hair in vistory rolls. When he saw me he spontaneously said "Wow, that look really suits you!" This from a person who never were the kind to give out compliments.

Made my day!

My vintage style for work is usually a 1950s cotton shirtwaist dress with a cardigan and heels. Coworkers lately have given me the "Donna Reed" and "Mrs. Cleaver" comments. I've also gotten joking, "Are you trying to upstage us all?" comments. Lots of "you look so cute." Whenever I wear vintage to work, it always goes over well.

I've gotten that several times, and I almost never wear 60s styles. For the masses, Mad Men is their only exposure/knowledge of vintage style. To them, anything pre-1970 is instantly Mad Men. I take it as a compliment! I will add that Betty Draper and Peggy do wear some 50s style dresses with full skirts and heels, though.

I got that a couple of months ago at a Wanda Jackson concert. A girl came up to me and said:"Why are you dressed like a Mad Men character?"
At a friggin' Wanda Jackson concert of all places! I replied with:"What's that?"

I get the Man Men comments too.

The other day I was asked if I was going jitterbugging and when I said no, the woman said she felt like she had gone back in time or that she was in a movie lol

I don't think people around here watch Mad Men. I've never met anyone who has mentioned it to me before. I don't know what that says about the area I'm in, but I don't think most people around here would be interested in it. Most people around here are really into reality TV and sports. Big, big football and basketball fans in particular.

Despite my coloring, the chef at the sushi restaurant that I picked up my lunch refers to me as Marilyn Monroe... Makes my day every time.

Okay.. I know I just posted but I have to tell y'all what just happened. When picking my daughter at daycare, one of the little girls in her class came up to me and asked me quietly, "Are you a queen?" Forget day, that made my week!

I smiled and told her, "No, sweetie. I'm not a queen." She replied with "Oh.. You look like a queen." She smiled really big and went off to play.

I've been preening about it since. If there was anything to boost my motivation and pull me out of the funk I've been in for months, it was that little girl's comment and smile.
