My fella Tom sports a moustache, have seen pictures of him without one (older pics and fairly recent) and I prefer him with. Since I've known him he has also sported below 'stache whiskers which I had said that I thought made him look older than his youthful energy and young at heart attitude suggested. He very recently shaved the whiskers and shortened the width of his moustache. He's also working these days on trimming it more often. I was very delightfully surprised when he did this, and I think he does now look indeed younger and even handsomer!

So I've seen some recipes for homebrew wax...

I note that someone earlier said that the good waxes are beeswax and petrolatum (our Vaseline). Well, the DIY recipes say to melt some beeswax over a stove then add Vaseline. Does that end up OK?

I once tried doubleboiling beeswax and Vaseline together -- didn't work. The wax didn't liquify. I didn't want to risk damaging a cookpot. I suppose I can figure another way out to get it melted then blended. But is this a reasonable process? Good result?

I tried melting the wax and vaseline together over a burner and it worked fine. So waterboiling doesn't work.

I also tried sporting a handlebar for the family today. Total rejection. "He looks like Mario!"

Rats. I think upturning is jaunty and dashing. It's traditional yet I bet it's making a comeback today. I'm a cyclist and I incline to tweed and bold strokes. C'mon!

Oh well, they're kinda bashful -- especially the kids, at 11 and 14.

Here's a pic. I chickened out sooner after and trimmed it a bit but I still want to turn 'em up. Downturn is old, to me. And a close-cropped stash also seems old. I'd think there's a wider range that would be acceptable. But who knows maybe I'm the one who's off base...

(Hey, I've uploaded a dozen 100 kb images over the years and I guess 1MB is still the limit? Guess I have to delete some but I don't see how. I'll look around... OK, I found out how to delete a couple of my small, sweet pics... Whew! 1MB?) OK, now I can upload my latest stash pic...

I'm currently growing a pencil moustahce, but I'm curious about the grooming of the 'stache. I've heard folks say don't trim it until a month goes by, and then others say shape or trim it as it grows. So which is it? Any help would be great.

Mr. Vim, you can go either way on the trim.
Either grow a full moustache and trim it down or shape it as it comes in.
Once you have the pencil 'stache in place it will need constant shaping and trimming.

Currently at 3 months of 'stache growth. I either get "Johnny Depp"! (from the Yacht Club security guards and the chaps at the rugby) or "Trotsky"! (from the Yacht Club members and hierarchy, Commodore etc.). I've got about a month left of growth before I take a trip back to England and need to shave it (the wife don't like the whiskers). May post pics at some point. I find that the 'stache density and length stays the same after a while. This is about 2.5 weeks into movember last year, and now, 3 months in, my 'stache isn't much longer or denser. Weird.

Ha.... I can see the Depp thing, especially at that angle. The glasses are very similar to his too, probably has something to do with it. That and the general vintage look...

Nice braces, BTW - where are they from?

Got the beginnings of my Montey Wooley handlebar started. Just need more growth and grooming to shape it right.

I have been using Buckaroo Brand wax by Jinglebobs, but that tin is running low and they are no longer selling their wax. So I've got on order a tin of Oregon Wild Hare Mustache wax. I'll give that one a try and see what the hold is like. Have been wanting to try Firehouse brand and Gravy Jays. But for mow I'll start with this and see what it is like. The beard will most likely disappear once spring warms up and it is feeling more like summer, but I think I'm keeping the old cookie duster. We'll see how it looks come late July when we do our hike up Mt. St. Helens.

Here are a couple of waxes from the UK.

Foad Wax

FOAD WAX is lovingly home made and hand poured. It is naturally coloured by the high presence of Pollen and Propolis in the pure British Beeswax, but dries clear. “I came across this wax while on the set of ‘Jack the Giant Killer’, a new feature film starring Ewan McGregor, being filmed partly at Hampton Court. This was being used by the make-up department and they suggested that I give it a try - not that I needed any assistance, as on all shoots, my own styling has always been untouched.

“Like most waxes, I found it to be a little too solid and needed to be softened by either the use of a hairdryer or plying between finger and thumb. Unlike ‘Gravy Jay’s’ wax (q.v.) from USA, which comes in a large tin and easy to extract, the Captain Fawcett wax is in a small glass container (looking like something one would buy from Bodyshop). It is well packaged and a good size for travel – which I will come to later. I found the easiest way to extract it was with the back of my nail. Not too sure how this is going to work once I get near the bottom! Unlike ‘Gravy Jay’s’, which has a real pungent petro/chemical smell - one surmises that it is to emulate that smell of straddling your HD FatBoy; for some reason in the States a Harley and graspable extremities seem to go hand in hand - ‘Captain Fawcett's’ has a pleasant aroma, with only a slight chemical nuance. The wax is ideal for that full soft look which I found good for everyday use.

“But for my more ‘sculptured’ look which has to stay in all day, it tends to make the shape more compact and with a tighter curl. So for this I use another product - ‘got 2b’ by Swartzkopf (a hair spiking glue, aimed at the younger market). This holds it firm and in the same shape all day and rarely needs further attention. The only problem with ‘got 2b’, I found to be at the airport, where it comes in a 150ml tube and exceeds the airport customs requirements. Damm security, whatever happened to common sense and discretion? (In fact Gatwick now has a half full tube of ‘got 2b’!). I think Captain Fawcett’s is a good product for the ‘everyday’ hirsute growth and the price is quite competitive with say, the ‘Gravy Jays’ or even the Kryolan (q.v.), as usually favoured by make-up artistes. The Kryolan is a completely different product and more in similarity to the ‘got2b’ product which I use-but in a MUCH smaller tube, less cost effective, and undoubtedly airport friendly.

This place has all kinds of grooming accessories waxes and more for your stache and beard. I think that their waxes come in unscented, bay rum & citrus scents. Not bad in pricing if you are on a budget.

Have used Mr Natty's Wax - he's a fellow member of the Handlebar Club - very good hold, actually pretty easy to apply and a pleasant fragrance.

Use Captain Fawcetts as my day-to day to give me shape, the hold is a day long one but is very easy to apply.

Like Bounder too, bit harder to apply but the hold is superlative.

I think that my next wax purchase once I go through the Oregon Wild Hair is Firehouse Mustache Wax. From what I understand it goes on really smooth with a good all day hold.
