Hair cuts

Lately, I've taken to getting my cut longer on the sides, and a shorter on top than the 6+ length it used to be (very hard to comb a quiff with that for me). Hairs tapered a bit on the sides, but the top length is more like 3 1/2 inches.

It's a very good look for you. I always think it looks nicer to have the hair a little longer on the sides. It reminds me a little of DiCaprio, as he's been wearing his hair as of late.

I swear, if I'm ever in London, I need to look up Mr. Natty and get a haircut & shave from him in one of his Pop-Up barber shops.

A few months back there were all manner of discussions on this thread over the extreme short back and sides and its authenticity. just to get everyone going again, here's a British speedway rider from 1935:

A Dozen Years of Haircuts

When I first got into vintage livin' back in the late 1990s and early 2000s, my hair was full and thick. I grew it long and kept it long, visiting a local barber three or four times a years.


As the years past, I noticed my hair getting increasingly thinner, and my hairline slowly but surely crawling further and further back. Additionally, my own interest in period specific hairstyles grew so I decided to seek out a 'vintage' barber. This was around 2006, and Don Hawley had made a name for himself in the rockabilly scene and had just released his layrite pomade. I went to the Hawleywood's shop in Long Beach and asked for the next barber available. Little did I know that the guy I would be paired up with would be my go-to barber for the next six years: Omar Romero. I pointed to a cut on a poster in the shop labeled "the Hawleywood Puff," Omar asked me if I really wanted it that short. I said yeah, and off came roughly 75% of my hair.


It was a manageable cut and held a nice pompadour but I missed the length of my hair on top and disliked the way my hair spiked out on the sides once it started to grow back in.

As the years passed, I followed Omar to Sweeny Todd's in Hollywood and started to settle into a more conservative low & tight cut that was more consistent with my 1940s aesthetic. This has been my standard hair cut for years.


Recently, I noticed my hair getting pretty thin towards the top/back part of my head; not a complete bald spot, but it will be in about 10-15 years! Since my interests have started to delve more into the 1930s, I decided to go for the full-on John Dillinger mugshot cut so I could raise the blend above the thin spot. I popped into Sweeny's shop, and since Omar had left to establish his own space in Silverlake, I waited for Victor of the nightshift to cut my hair. Victor took his clippers out and asked me "are you ready?" I gritted my teeth, said "yeah," and he proceeded to shave away. The cut turned out great, and was a definite change for me.


I recently got a new haircut from Omar which is a happy medium between my previously standard low & tight and my new high & tight look. I think I will stick with this cut for the time being.

The new cut looks great man!!

Thanks, Omar even fashioned the blend to give it a less uniform and more period-accurate appearance, a touch often over looked by contemporary barbers!

Really great posts there Resortes805. I've always enjoyed your posts but this stands out as being a really excellent one.

I know Omar and his work thru when he was at Todds, and I'm on his FB page. If your in with Omar or ST's will you tell Todd/Omar that Mr. 'H' from the Waldorf Barbershop in Dublin says hello. It really is a small world.

I generally go with what we call a College Contour. I was actually away on vacation and I gave myself a size-up (i.e. wet shaved off bottom inch and faded in.) I read Flattop saying he did his own so I'll post a pic of how mine turned out -

Sorry if it looks like I'm flipping the bird in the pic above, just showing my handiwork. Here's a snap the missus took today after the Waldorf Barbershop touched up the fade when I got home.

The cut looks great Mr. 'H'! I always cut mine myself. The "Lindorf" has proven to be extremely time consuming to do-it-yourself, but I love the results.

I love this. I do it with my Wahl buzzer every weekend when I do my head. I'm thin on top so its not as cooldramatic as yours, though.

Lol, you are probably right! Unless I cut it every few days, maintaining the flat-top is pretty impossible!

i've noticed (in London anyway) that there are many better hairstyles around on men in the last couple of years than there has been since the Brylcreem craze of the 80s.
short back and sides, long-ish on top, neatly side parted. very 30s. but then, the vintage aesthetic is closer to the mainstream than i can ever remember.

I think that the footballer Scott Parker - with his short back and sides, complete with very neat parting - had a major impact. He took the look that had become popular with plenty of trendy/student types and exposed it to the wider population of football fans. Most presentable it is. My twelve year old son now has that haircut (mind you, he previously had a floppy fringe that, depending on how recently it had been cut went from Hitler Youth, to 1920s student, to 1950s Hungarian).

I have now come across an image that represents what I am shooting for, when it comes to haircuts:
