To be totally nerdy, but... He was only recently reawakened so I don't think he had a chance to shop for anything. His clothes, like his surroundings, were provided for him by S.H.I.E.L.D. so that he wouldn't be too traumatized by his transition to modern times. There are 30 minutes of footage that cover part of this (as did part of the Captain American film) that will be on the DVD as an extra, including scene where Captain America keeps a date he promised a long time ago.

It didn't add much, but I thought that it worked very well. Most of the scenes were done with depth, and so it increased the atmosphere. There was very little of the gimmicky throwing things out of the screen, which I always finds pulls me out of the film.

Caught it last night and loved it! Feld like I was 7 again going to the "corner store" to get the magazine that was half Capt. America and half Iron Man at the time. Gotta give Whedon credit. It was funny when it needed to be and serious when it had to be, just the right balance. The entire cast was spot on perfect. I even liked Hawkeye! I especially liked the fact that he ran out of arrows! Finally the hero runs out of bullets! My fave scene though did involve a green personage meeting Thors half bro for the first time. That my friends is how you bring the pain! Thanks for telling me about the "stingers" at the end. Cherry on top of one great ice cream sunday. I'm sure DC is readying their own Justice League feature but the bars been set mighty damn high and they'll have to really bring their "A" game if they want to match it much less beat it! Nice nuances in Fury's portrayl as well, not afraid to buck his superiors or lie to his team to get the job done. The girl sitting in front of me joyously told everyone that would listen that she was seeing the film for the THIRD time already. That, as they say in the biz, is legs. Welp for those who haven't seen it yet. enjoy the ride!

Saw the film last night and thoroughly enjoyed it! I have to say though, Stark (Downey) stole the show! Definitely didn't expect to laugh as much as I did.

I was thinking that, too, that Stark still managed to be the center of attention - which is exactly how his character is anyway. lol

I guess I am the only one who finds Downey's bratty billionaire playboy routine rather trite and definitely not a highlight of the film.
I never read The Avengers or Iron Man comic books as a kid but was Stark's character this annoying??

No, in the early books he was more troubled about his health, the limitations of his suits, threats to his technology etc.. He was not a smart aleck. That came with later incarnations. I unfortunately think you're in the minority in hating Downey's smug bratness. If he didn't have that persona then his world saving sacrifice at the end would have no basis in change, if you get my drift. Cap tells him he doesn't have the guts to bridge the wire or fall on the hand grenade, but in the end... he does.

Interesting article suggesting that the major reason for the film's success is that director Whedon handles the story and characters far more like one of his TV shows than the typical heroic film:
