I just thought I'd share, recently I bought these:

And this has eliminated my need for wrapping papers when I do a foam roller set! They are basically foam rollers with satin wrapped around them. They work wonderfully and come in many different sizes.

Alrighty then! I am trying to find every photo I have of it, and I will play around this week. Hopefully by the weekend I will have it figured out (as that style was a total accident that turned out lovely), and as soon as I do, I will post a tut!

I wonder if any of you ladies can tell me what I'm doing wrong. I've tried doing my hair in small pincurls, large pincurls (which work best), spraying them damp before, spraying them after they're pinned (both result in perfectly dry hair in the morning), and they always look just fine when I'm done setting them. Except for some reason in the morning they just don't curl. Usually I wake up with big wonky un-curly hair, and it is enough to make a hot roller set last all day even in high humidity, however curling my hair at night AND in the morning is just silly and too time consuming. I'd really like to know where I'm going wrong.

Penny, just to clarify.... Your curls aren't holding? From your post it sounds like you are taking out your pincurls and still have straight hair, is that right?

Are you using any kind of setting lotion, or just water? What type of hair do you have? Clean, freshly washed hair or dirty?

Sorry for the barrage of questions but I suspect it will help narrow things down.

Yep that's right. They come out almost straight, just with a few weird bends in it, almost just like I slept on it funny. I use Lottabody diluted in water about 1/5. I do this with both clean and 2-3 day old hair. My natural hair type is fine and stick straight. Thank you for helping!

Ever since I found out from a tutorial by JitterbugDoll/Miss Amanda Lee. That I do not have to use pins/clips to do pincurls, I have'nt used them since and without dents.
I learned I could use spongy rod rollers http://m.ulta.com/mt/www.ulta.com//ulta/browse/productDetail.jsp?productId=xlsImpprod1810003 on dry hair with motions setting lotion once one the first night after I washed and dryed my hair. Then I reroll it every night and lightly spritz it with water and sleep on them for 6-7 hours to set, tied with a head scarf. Then I brush them out and style as desired. So last night I tried pin curling my hair using the Sculpture Pincurler that Lisa Freemont Street recommends. It definitely wasn't faster, it took me an hour. But I think that's because I'm so inexperienced and the curls were a lot smaller than what I usually do on my own. It worked perfectly though, my hair curled extremely tightly. My hair is about 14 inches long now and after curling it's resting above my shoulders. It took forever to brush into a style, but I'm sure that's normal. It's still not quite as smooth as I would like but I think I did a great job of brushing it into a nice tight pageboy and I have this great s-wave over one side. So I'm very satisfied, this is the first successful set I've ever done on my own, the first successful pincurl set I've had since my grandma did it for me once when I was about 9. I think tonight I'll pin it up in slightly bigger sections without the styler (easier now that it's already curly) and have it settle into something a little softer for tomorrow.
Now I just have to figure out how to hide the straight ends of my many hair flairs.

I've come to report (I'm excited!) that my first serious attempt at pin curling went quite well. I only did the top section as that took me 40 minutes and I didn't want to carry on in case it all looked awful in the morning! I found the curls surprisingly easy to style compared to those from sponge rollers, and the brushout was a lot easier. Tonight I'll be doing my whole head in alternating rows, and I'm hoping it will be a bit faster now that I have a tiny bit of experience! I will post a photo if it goes well.

I have not been able to curl my hair much these days do to the extreme heat that is visiting these days. I pin curled my hair for the first time in months. And was very pleased with the results. I learned with past attempts I was adding to much hair to the pin curl my hair is medium thick. I learned how to measure how much hair to began with when pin curling. All I do is measure with the tip of my finger and make sure the hair is not to thick when I roll it and secure with two long straight bobby pins.

I am so happy right now

I flat pincurled my hair for the first time in ages whilst watching Goodfellas last night

D), purely because I couldn't be bothered to go and fetch my rollers and a mirror, and the results are not just great, but have miraculously given me the hairstyle I've been aiming for for months- I've been wanting a side-parted, smooth, wavy look as opposed to curls- kind of a cross between the Bacall set and some of the straighter 50s hair looks. With my short layers, I can normally only get something like it when my hair is flat and greasy- even huge rollers give me too much curl, and I spend ages trying to flatten down the roots (usually to no avail). So I couldn't believe it when I brushed out my hair this morning- especially as I have had *zero* luck with flat pincurls in the past; I was expecting a frizzy, wonky, hook-ended mess, and I got smooth waves and big curls, with some brushing!

Given that they're easier to sleep on than rollers I think I may be converted- I just hope it's not a fluke!
