There is also the matter of the full weight of the chain working to pull the thing off your face. I suppose that wouldn't be an issue if you were just holding it up for brief periods to look at something close up.

Nice improvisation with the specs!

The screw's now in flush and tight, so the frame won't be popping apart anytime soon!

This particular monocle isn't meant for eye-socket placement (if it was, I would've used a leather cord, which I believe is more traditional). It's merely a handy pocket magnifying glass. I bought it in London and it was indispensable when I was reading stuff like maps, brochures and how to find my way around the Underground.

Since I only use it for brief periods of time, the chain is all I need. Plus I think it looks better with the chain.

I already explained it's not meant to go in my eye-socket. Otherwise I *would* have used a ribbon. It's not sized to fit in my eye, so there's no point trying to make it do what it won't.

Of course, I'd love it if I did have a magnifying monocle that would fit in my eye, but I'm not that lucky...

You would also have to contend with the focal length, as most magnifying lenses are meant to be held some considerable distance from the eye in order to focus properly.

Shangas, next time you go in for new frames for your specs, you ought to see if your optometrist has pince-nez frames available; you might be pleasantly surprised!

I WILL wear pince-nez if I ever have deteriorating eyesight. Those things are the cat's meow ;)

Yes, a monocle must be ground to be placed close to the eye, and must have a textured rim to help keep it in place. Without these it's a quizzing glass. Eustace Tilley uses a quizzing glass.

As the article mentions, some are using them as a substitute for reading glasses when just a quick glance at something is required. Perks my interest as groping around for my readers to check the phone or a receipt is a royal pain and there's no way I'm hanging them around my neck like some do. I guess I'd rather be thought a hipster than an AARPSTER. :p

Yeah. I live not a million miles from hipster central here in London, and they're certainly yet to be spotted there. Outside of a borderline racist parody of they English, I highly doubt anyone in Dublin has worn a monocle for the best part of a century, at least. To be fair, I can see thed attraction for the business pushing the rise of what "they call" the "new gent" in order to promote their business. Sounds more to me like he doesn't know the difference between the average hipster and yer genuine article anarcho-dandyist mind.... ;)
