US Army Denim Work Clothing M1937

Hey Gang,

Looking for detailed info, photos etc of the US Army denim work clothing. So figured I'd start a thread.

I'm putting together a pre/early war impression, and wanted to research the denim and ANY help... images, etc are appreciated. I know the Japanese mags have great stuff and scans from them I've found online helped.

I have the WW2 Impressions stuff but what little info I have found online, the denim used is too light in weight and definately not indigo as issued. Have found true Indigo "slub yard" denim, 11oz... which is way stoughter and darker than the WW2 Impressions stuff.

And the pants have a weird cut making the hips flare out and legs taper in rather than being straight legged... Don't want to copy the WW2 impressions set, but will if I have no choice.

I have a vintage pullover shirt,the ww2 Imp fabric is fine,its the same weight as denim seabags

Are you doing regular army, early war ATC, or coastal artillery? Those are 3 who I can think of that used denim and they did not use the same types. I saw at least 3 styles of denim in the pictures Alden405 posted. The watch pocket on the fellow in the gas mask makes his pants look like they are civilian purchased.

Hi

Dad joined the USAAC Weather Squardon in July 1941 following college graduation. I asked and he never wore or saw Denims. He started at Scott AFB, went to Chanute and Mitchell Field before going overseas November 2, 1942.

Clint,
I noticed that you live in Maryland. Since so many pictures posted are equestrian, you should swing down Rt 95 to Fort Lee and see if they have any good info for you at the Quartermaster's museum. There were several Coastal Artillery denims at the Fort Monroe museum in Hampton, VA before but I havn't been by there since the Army gave it to the Park Service. Navy style dungarees are the only denim on display at the Transportation Museum at Fort Eustis.

I had noticed that they were yours, I guess I was a bit misleading in the way I worded my post. Very good collection of pictures of a uniform that has been neglected and almost forgotten in history.

Denim was not worn as much in some units as it was in others. Coastal artillery wore mosly denim and from the pictures it shows that the cavalry and quartermasters wore quite a bit as well.

I know that the boat going element of the US army had this uniform in 45 as well
