Richard III. Haven't read Shakespeare since high school english courses totally alienated me from this writer. Quite entertaining when you don't have to write a report or analyze anything! Makes me feel like finding my copy of Josephine Tey's A Daughter of Time.

This is a really important work because it's the first really exhaustive academic study of atrocities committed in Spain during and after its Civil War.

I was in Richard III at the Utah Shakespearean Festival back in 1987. I was Richmond's (played by a young Benjamin Bratt) herald.

Gee ... looks like some uplifting inspirational holiday reading. :eeek:

I just recently read the Savage Continent by Keith Lowe. Just as emotionally draining, I suppose.

William Hjorstberg's mammoth biography of Richard Brautigan. As good a social history of a now vintage time as it is about the man and writer.

Inspired by a posting by Tridentine, I am reading again Dr. William Ellery Channing's seminal "A Sermon Delivered at the Ordination pf the Reverend Jared SparkS, to the Pastoral Care of the Firdt Independent Church, Baltimore, May 5, 1819"

tomorrow I will return to Edwin Amenta's "When Movements Matter, The Townsend Plan and the Riseof Social Security"

The Black Box, Michael Connelly's latest Harry Bosch novel.

After that I've got a bunch of 1930s low-brow pulp stuff to get me through the hollidays - Operator 5, The Spider, The Shadow, and Phantom Detective.

"Jafsie Tells All," by Dr. John F. Condon -- the 1936 first-person account by the Bronx eccentric who served as the intermediary in the Lindbergh Kidnapping Case. Although Condon's testimony was key to the conviction of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the murder of the child, Jafsie himself went to his own grave convinced that Hauptmann had accomplices -- who were never caught.
