The tobacco speakeasy...

For starters, I am not a smoker, but I love smoking.
I'm the typical 1930s type of social smoker, when I have guests I offer them a cigarette and smoke one myself, when I go out dancing and am offered a smoke, I'll enjoy it.
I also feel bars just aren't complete without smokers and cigarette girls

Anyway, smokers are having it tough these days, especially in America.
And I've been wondering if someone has set up a smokers speakeasy... and if not... why not?

Imagine the 1920s type of speakeasy but in stead of illegally selling and enjoying alcohol, you enjoy tobacco!

Alleyway with a door with a hatch.... big guy asking for the password... chorusgirls dancing on stage... a band playing 1920s music... lotsa smoke... and of course something to drink as well...

I'd never leave!

Great idea, but I bet you'd do less time in prison for robbing three liquor stores and wounding the cashier in each one. Cigarettes are EVIL in the US.

In the UK you cannot smoke inside a Pub yet if the owner puts up a tent in the Garden that's seams to be OK, also you cannot smoke on a unmanned railway station even without any building on it or even if your the only person waiting for a train.
As far as I can see the law holds firm maybe that is becuse something like only 25% of people smoke that's just a ball park figure BTW and I sure it will alter around the country.

We've got quite a few pubs in the Netherlands that refuse to abide by the law and are being tolerated by the government, so far.
I'm not really a smoker myself, but all this anti smoking nonsense is almost making me want to become one.

I do not know if any one has been prosecuted in the UK for braking this law, maybe some one else here know this.
I not even sure who would be in trouble the individual or the pub/ owner of the premises

I have found a wonderful smoking divergence - Blu! These electronic cigarettes are neat. Being a smoker myself I find them to be a way of getting your nicotine fix without all the dangerous smoke stuff. They are somewhere around 1/4 to 1/2 the cost of cigarettes, emit no smoke but vapor, and come in all strengths and flavors. Not only that, they look very classy, you can get the black or the white "cigarettes." Its cool how they work: the battery is about 3/4 the length of a regular cigarette with a nicotine cartridge that screws into the end of it. It looks just like a cigarette and lights up blue on the tip when you take a drag. Shiny black ones or shiny white ones. I know many people who are turning to this as an alternative to smoking or a way to give up cigarettes altogether. Google Blu.

Jo, if you come to New York (and you SHOULD!) I'll take you to the Carnegie Lounge, and we'll see my friend Drew Nugent, who practically channels Bix Beiderbecke when he plays his cornet.

A tobacco speakeasy, well, that would be nice. Here in the Netherlands some bars do not follow the rules, and smoking is allowed, not by law but by he owner. Most of those bars are not the place I would go to. Not my kind of bars, not at all.
A few weeks ago, I was in a bar that used to be a livingroom (and sort of still is), some friends were playing some old-time country/folk/americana on stage. Some comfortable chairs and tables. And I was able to enjoy the music while drinking a good beer and smoking my pipe. For me, that was heaven.
