Comments You Get When You Dress Vintage

Random person at the grocery store: "Whoa, you look like you're stuck in the past."

Me: "No, I'm trapped in the future. Wish I knew how to get home."

Yeah that's amazing!

I just got laughed at the other day (I was wearing a hat) for the first time in years I think.... I would have been self conscious a few years ago. But now all I could think was 'that is so sad and naive....' I feel blessed to be able to see the value of the past, to appreciate and love vintage and fashion history. It truly enriched my life :) I honestly wish everyone could enjoy that feeling.

I don't get many comments, probably because people are used to me dressing in vintage clothes & many of my friends dress vintage daily as well. There are a few people who regularly comment on liking my "style" or that I'm always dressed nicely. My fiance & I get a lot of "don't you look nice" or "wow, how fancy" when we are out together.

Although the all time best comment came from my 12 yr old. I said something about my slip one day & she looked at me & said "what are you an 80 yr old woman?", then turned to her 90 yr old great-grandmother (who was also there) & said "but not like you Omi." LOL!

I went to the grocery the other day, dressed in a 40s dress and saddles, with Jake (boyfriend that dresses more like a greaser than anything) and this woman (about 70/80) stopped us and said "Oh my! You two look like you just stepped out of the 40s! You with your pretty dress and saddles and him with his cuffed pants. His moustache even makes him look like a pilot from the era!" Well, that comment about his moustache pleased Jake to no end lol She was really very sweet :)

I don't think this outfit looks too "unordinary." Like, I think I could wear it out somewhere "normal" and blend in. I guess?

Worst comment ever; Biker walks up to me at a gas station where I'm waiting for a ride because my car bombed out up the road, he says "Hey, nice suit man; give me your money, I need gas (while hitting his open palm with a tire thumper bat in his other hand and grinning at me). I said "Thanks, but I really can't help you.", he said "Aww, too bad for you", and lunged at me, I dodged, and smashed the side of his helmet with a squeegie so hard that his helmet flew off and he fell down covered in gray soap scum water. Actually, pretty epic. He tried running me over with his bike but I whacked him in the face again with the squeegie as he came at me, and he flew off onto the lawn of an apartment building, hit a brick planter edging and flew off into a bush. Late night fun at the gas station folks! YIKES!

YIKES INDEED!! :eeek:

I just had a customer come in to pick up some product and I was told that he loved my look, but I was missing the full sleeve tattoos... [huh]

I'm a teacher and I just asked the Dept Head if we were doing anything for Comic Relief this year. Someones suggested staff fancy dress and he looked at me and said 'You could just come as you are.'

I gave him a 'look' and said, 'Well, Dean, I'm not sure how to take that!' and he looked Very flusterered and said, 'Oh, I just meant that I don't think fancy dress would be a good idea and I think we should all come as we usually do.'

Hmmmmmm...

I don't really get comments when out shopping as I'm usually dressed 'comfy' but my SO likes to dress up- vintage hat (with crow feathers tucked into the hatband!) waistcoat, pocket watch, vintage coat etc. He never fails to get appreciative comments form both men and women- some women even ask me about him when he's standing right there, which is quite odd!

I jokingly tell him that I won't bother getting dressed up anymore as no-one will notice me next to him!

A guy said this to me as I was walking by "your all strawberried up". :)

I think that sounds lovely :)

I usually get asked why I am so dressed up. Funny thing is, I normally only get that from other women.

I have this great little straw handbag that I use a lot in the summer. It has little bamboo handles that I can hold with my hand, or drape over my wrist. Every time I carry it, this one friend makes the same comment " Interesting purse. It looks like something the old lady from GOLDEN GIRLS would carry." Wearing vintage does not make me feel like a Granny. Quite the opposite.

The Golden Girls is a great show, I laugh so much at the humor every time I watch the show, they had some great script writers. I think being told you remind some one of the Golden Girls is a wonderful comment. I've always adored Sofia's purse.

I hear similar comments from my friends too. I haven't begun to wear vintage yet (only just started to add pieces to my wardrobe), but a few times when I've pointed out an outfit or dress that I like to one of my friends, the general reply is "that reminds me of something my grandma would wear." I sometimes feel like shouting, "yes your grandma would have worn that, in her youth!" But of course I'd never yell at anyone for expressing their opinions, no matter how much I may feel like doing so lol it just baffles me when people refer to vintage fashion or accessories as old ladyish, because when women were wearing such things, they were young ladies and not grandmas. Besides, vintage fashion is timeless and you're never too young or too old to look classy and glamorous!

I'm sure your purse is lovely, Olive! I've always loved straw handbags, they have such a charming quality about them.

On Thursday, I had a customer come in and tell me that I looked like Marilyn Monroe. When I looked at him surprised, he told me "in the face" not my coloring. I wasn't even vintage-y that day. Just simple makeup, my hair in an alice band, jeans, and a green long sleeve tee. I've heard mention of people that just exude that, but I never thought it would be me!
