Question on stockman vs cheyenne vs veste

Hey guys, I was wondering what the difference was in these coats in regards to fit and length. I remember reading that the stockman was supposed to be the more trim fit, but then Mark from Aero was saying the Cheyenne was the trimer fit. In terms of length, are they all the same?

This is something i am also interested to know more about as at some point this year i will be visiting the factory to place an order for one of these coats.

you can customize the length, but I think if you take stock versions then the lengths on these are the same.

As I understand it these are supposed to be a length that covers your buttocks entirely

For me carrying around that much FQHH or steerhide is not desirable, which (in part) is why I find the Hercules and Teamster more attractive prospects. These are also longer jackets, but come up a bit shorter than those 3

I wouldn't let weight worry you. My Stockman weighs less than a pound more than my 1.75" shorter Teamster, which is a cross I willingly bear.

As it happens, I'm finding I wear my Stockman more, although reducing the length to 30" probably helped.

Fanch - surely to goodness your Teamster must be en route by now! That foal has long since become a pensioned off FQHH.

JK, I did order a Cheyenne and found that it was just too bulky for me.

As Amanda told me at the time, these coats are really big and ment to use as an overcoat. However, a lot of people look great in these coats. I think you just have to have the right physique to pull it off.

I have had all 3 ( and still have 2 x VDR's) and a couple of Barnstormers ..... haven't got actual measurements to hand but can get them for the VDR's and Barnstormers which I still have. Feedback as follows.

Squarest and most "boxy" is the VDR .. a 44" VDR fits like a 46" suit jacket but looks no worse for it as it's cut shorter in the body than the Stockman and Cheyenne by about 2".

Longest and neatest (width wise) is the Stockman IMHO ( well mine was at least) - not much between it and the Barnstormer. Cheyenne was half way between a VDR and Barnstormer.

Cheyenne fit like a slightly neater than the VDR but about 1" longer , the Stockman more like the Barnstormer.

I wear a 44" VDR ( I have 2 - I know this appears strange since it's the boxiest but it just feels better than the 42" which FELT too neat all over) , a 42" Barnstormer, 42" Cheyenne and 42" Stockman all of which feel / felt fine ( I wear a 44" std. halfbelt / bike jacket and Highwayman .. and some say I like a more "modern" fit on these )

ALL of the above are/were FQHH and Alpaca lined .... but not all the FQHH's felt the same, and not all Alpaca linings were equal (the newer ones being MUCH thinner and felt softer but were actually itchier) .... my Black VDR is my go to jacket in this style, it REALLY softened up. My brown VDR still feels like 3lbs heavier and like Rhino hide. Barnstormer somewhere in between and more of an "office / going out coat". Cordovan Cheyenne went a couple of years ago as I was made a VERY good offer on it - that was a REALLY nice colour - and my Black Stockman never really got worn so I sold it 3 or 4 years ago on ebay.

For better or worse, I think this is true of most jackets and clothing in general.

I have a Stockman that I had slightly shortened by about an inch or two (bought in back in 2008) and while it is a heavy jacket, it can be worn without it feeling overly punishing. I would not use it if I was going to be strolling around all day long, say on vacation for a visit to a museum as it would get uncomfortable on the shoulders and back, but for basic wearing you won't notice it any more than any other jacket/coat.

As for fit, the Stockman is meant to be the slimmest of the 3 large Aero overcoats (the others being the Veste de Rallye and the Cheyenne), but given how flexible Aero is with its mods you can apply basic changes to one or the other to achieve the fit/look you seek. The coat still looks good on me even though I've lost a lot of weight since I purchased it, FQHH is a fantastic material that just works - once of course you've had a few years to soften it up a bit
