I don't know. I look at that video and feel embarrassed and guilty I supported the entertainment industry for as long as I did.

They are unattractive hats. And in this case cheap and low quality go hand in hand.
We could discuss Chinese labor practices or politics, but the fact is I don't buy new American hats,
with extremely rare exceptions.

Regarding the Vet/Murray's Furs sign: in our little town in Florida, there is a shopping center that has a pet store next to a Chinese restaurant which is the subject of many local jokes.

I didn't watch the video, but based on the descriptions you all gave, I think I've seen it before.

I would like to note that PETA also does not approve of honey, or silk. And they also advocate eating roadkill.

Also, the founder of PETA has arranged to, after she dies, have her flesh barbequed, her skin made into purses, her feet made into umbrella stands, one of her eyes removed and sent to the administrator of the EPA, her index finger sent to Ringling Bros. & Barnum & Bailey Circus, her liver sent to France, her ear sent to Canadian Parliament, her thumb, pointing up, sent to PETAs best supporter, her other thumb, pointing down, sent to the foremost opposer of PETA, and part of her heart buried near the Hockenheim racetrack, "just to show us". I'm truly sorry you had to read that, but I feel that people should know that the founder of PETA is, apparently, crazy.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all for the ethical treatment of animals, but I think that it's natural for humans to use animals for their own needs. I do have a problem with modern factory farming, both for the sake of the animals and the quality of the products, but I don't think the solution is to stop interacting with animals altogether. PETA has a good cause, but they take things too far, very frequently. But that's just my take on the situation.

And on the topic of people not knowing what hats are made of, I had a friend that though they were primarily made of cotton.

This thread started out as a fairly straightforward opportunity to discuss the ethics (problematic to some, not to others) of fur production, but has drifted into a rant against PETA. Too bad, really, because PETA is merely a blip on the radar of a centuries-long and inevitable consideration of how species interact now and will in the future. (Ingrid Newkirk may well be regarded as a visionary woman centuries from now.)

To return to the crux of what can be considered a choice one way or the other, I vote vintage only.

it is very sad to see those cruel method!
Anyway I don't know a method to kill that is not cruel.
To kill is a sad thing to do; we eat animal meat ( I do it )...I have no answer...

There was a scare a couple of years ago regarding cat and dog fur coming out of China, though the problem was not it being passed off as rabbit or beaver, but as faux fur.

Great that fakes of fake product would be made in China

An increasing part of our business is in protecting (or at least trying to) brands from counterfeit products getting into the supply chain - it is a huge industry. Just as I hate the cruelty to animals, but happily wear furfelt or leather products, I also help the luxury goods brands even when I know they are ripping us off so badly they deserve to have their products copied. Or, as happens a lot these days, the same contract manufacturer makes extra products to the same specs from the same material.

Buying locally whenever possible has to be the way forward.
