Why!!!! Hipsters!!! Why!!!!!

That's always my question. I live a simple, country way of life. I don't try to change where I live, because I like the way it is. I don't move elsewhere and tell them that they need to make their town more to my liking. Why do they have to do it to us?

Yup. We had so many old hippies buy farms around us and then complain about the smell of manure and gunshots during deer season. You do realize where you moved to, right?

Maybe in the city, but folks where I live won't go for it.

Because they think they know better then you do.

Those hippies who own farms around you will be there along with the hipsters they spawned.

Luckily, none of them have kids to raise. These are sixties hippies. They're all old and kids are long gone. They move out here to retire, and complain about the natives, I guess.

I must admit, one of the great things about my suburb is that there really are no hipsters, ironic or any other type. I'm close enough to drive 10 min and smell the beautiful smell of farming, yet, I can drive down to a 24 hour pharmacy if need be. I would rather live in a small country village but I guess G-d did not have that in store for me. Maybe one day I'll get a chance to buy 100 acres somewhere.

How do you identify them as "Hippies"? Do they yet wear Tye-dye and Love beads? Flowers in their hair?
Drive orange and green Volkswagen Microbusses?

reading the last few pages made me smile, one big ocean dividing us with the same problems, over here we've had the same issue going on for around 30+ years in that 'rich townies' are buying up all the old and semi derelict properties in 'our' countryside, living in Derbyshire all my life I've seen most of the old run down farms/ houses being bought up and restored, I guess you can't blame the older 'natives' for selling their run down homes at prices they'd never dreamt of but as has been stated being dictated to by the 'newbies' takes some swallowing but as many of the 'townies' are well educated, conected, respectable and eager to get involed then I guess we can't expect any different, I've lost count how many well to do Southern accents you know hear around my patch and 'rowdy' behaviour in what were once working mens pubs is very much frowned upon!
Not taking sides at all just stating the inevitable way of things, money talks I suppose!

That isn't a dog. That's a Hipster.
No one needs to kick a hipster. Unless she is LizzieMaine, and said hipster has failed to maintain the Strand popcorn popper.

What's "rowdy"? Do you count roughhouse and fisticuffs as a cherished part of working class culture?

Hmm! Fletch well that depends on your age and gender, if you were a 16-25 male in Derbyshire and certainly Chesterfield up until recently then for many it was probably cherished behaviour!!!
As for current 'rowdy' well it can be no more than a bit of loud talking with the odd cuss word that tends to accompany slightly inhebriated males that can get you warned or even thrown out of a local...I jest not!

Yep, that's the thing. Comes down to the almighty dollar. My dad sold our old farm for 3 times what he paid for it, to some yuppies. The house was listed for 3 days and was sold. We had it underpriced, I guess lol!

We had bought it and fixed it up, they in turn took it to the next level, fresh siding, refinished some of the hardwood that was under carpet. They gutted the barn to turn it into an apartment building (it wasn't zoned for that) got busted, went bankrupt. They sold it to another guy who bought it for another 115,000 more than we sold it for, and he just let it go to hell. I drove past it and the place is just run down, it's too bad.

money talks I suppose!

Tom, how close to Chicago are you? That's the kind of real estate @sshattery one associates with only the very biggest cities. Someone from Des Moines, Mpls, etc, would more likely move the property if they couldn't keep it up. But someone used to tight markets and speculation would just hold onto it with minimal upkeep, waiting for a sucker...

I am far from Chicago. Gotta be a 4-6 hour drive.

I know the guy who ended up with our old farm, he's an odd duck. Also bought my dad's old store downtown, started hanging out with his friends, it was a weird scenario.
