Vintage or Repro Hats?

I have recently begun taking notice of hats. I have never really been a hat person but lately, I think I've changed my mind about them. My husband has a driving cap that I have confiscated and now I'm intent on getting myself a vintage cowboy hat (yes, complete w/ that charming little string meant to hang it round my neck)

Anyway, I was just watching The Best Years of Our Lives and I seriously love that beautiful little 'crownless' hat that Teresa Wright is wearing at the end...

Grace Kelly wore one at the end of High Society. Evidently, it's a 'daytime event' look. Where can I obtain one of these babies...and is there an official name for them?

I know there is probably a thread somewhere this can be combined with...

I think that is a portrait hat, but basically you're looking for any hat with a wide brim. I go for vintage (and it is less expensive usually than repro), but you should be able to find either kind on Etsy or eBay (you may want to just use 'wide brim' as a keyword instead of something more specific).

Thanks Cici...know of any sellers on etsey? I got a rediculous ammount of responses under that...

Always stick with vintage, unless you actually know your millner and have seen/touched their designs before. There's a charming one in town who used vintage supplies, and I would buy from her if I could afford it, but I just prefer to own originals. Besides, they retain their value.

Crownless hats are less common, but not impossible to find. I didn't check out what SayCiCi referred you to. But I would definitely hunt ebay and etsy, and save a search on ebay, too, for vintage wide brim/brimmed hat in the 47-64 category. Something will pop up soon!!

I don't mean to derail a thread here, but my mom just purchased a 'crownless' straw hat from an estate sale for me, and it's decorated with cherries & other fake fruits--my question is, is this appropriate to wear to daytime events, like the OP said? Would it be okay to wear it with, say, one of the peasant blouse/dirndl skirt combos from the 40s? I'm going to my first 40s event in June and I want to be appropriately attired XP

Same here. I always chuckle a bit at the fact that I can get a one of a kind 1920s/1930s hat that chances are no one else in the world has for much cheaper than a reproduction that a couple of hundred or thousand people will be wearing.
