oh my..just beautiful. My bedroom is decorated in sort of a old parisian style..this really inspires me to keep going now with the rest of my apartment..thanks so much for posting,,and what a fascinating story.


Speaking of Paris Apartments...are you all familiar with this site? I have never actually bought anything from here..but i go to it for inspiration and just to feast my eyes...

I would suggest the apartments owner was very wealthy. As the painting of her grandmother indicates she was well connected at the time. The owner may have set up a trust of sorts or auto bill pay as we call it today to automatically pay rent as long as the account was open and had money. Its possible she was not getting any financial advise and their was enough money to keep this place and where she resided afloat w/o any remorse.
In Europe people sign long term leases for property and land at a locked in price for a hundred years or more. Guiness starting brewing at The St. James Gate in 1759. They originally signed a 5 acre lease for 9,000 years. The lease was broken because they needed more land. But you understand the principal. This may have been rented at a fixed rate to the original owner.

Rent control came early in Paris, it started in the 20s or 30s. Thanks to inflation, by the fifties the monthly rent on an apartment like that cost about the same as a couple of cartons of cigarettes. After 50 years the rent would be a trifle.

The case of Huguette Clark comes to mind. At first it was thought that she was a recluse but it turned out she hadn't lived in the apartment (or her other incredible properties) for years but instead stayed in a hospital suite.

If you look closely at one of the photos you can see some wallpaper peeling with apparent water damage to the wall behind it....but it's amazing that there was never any other building disasters in all those years. I'm thinking like a burst pipe or a fire or something that would require the building managers to come into the apartment. It's also amazing that it was never broken into and robbed.
