Fastuni, that illustration is particularly bad. it could almost have been created to put people off the look. but there are also wide shouldered 'bold look' illustrations which are equally as ridiculous but for the opposite reasons. i have no intention of reproducing a jazz suit, as i find details such as triple link buttons, and piped edges very vaudeville. there are also many early 20s suits which look nothing like the above. i think the jazz suit is interesting more as something of a historical oddity.
Yes, the "gaudy" details of the jazz suit are also an off-putting factor.
While there are certainly early 20's suits with cuts that are much more agreeable to me, it ultimately boils down again to the issue of what is suited for different body types. With my 61 cm head and slender built, (38-40 inches chest and 183 cm height) I consider any suit without considerable shoulder and chest padding difficult to pull off. American "Bold Look" is not so much my cup of tea (particularly the DB), but that is mostly because of the "light make" and "straight box" look. I found that 40's (also the very padded late-40's to early 50's) European suits are very flattering to me - making the head appear a bit smaller and adding horizontal width to the body.

It's what happened when you wore slim fits back in the day. Classic Club Collar though!
While somewhat exaggerated (grossly so... just compare hand to head relation) by this illustration it shows well why I'd never wear something from the early 20's... "waterhead effect".

Wow! This thread is an absolute gold mine for great suits! I personally think that the suits of the 20s are by far the nicest looking suits of any era. The pants, the jackets, everything just seems so... correct!
I been thinking about convincing my parents to let me have a suit made for my 16th birthday later this month and I do believe I'll using this thread for reference!
Does anyone have a fabric suggestions? Anything that is close to a 20s weight/style would be appreciated.

I think a heavy wool over 12 ounces would be good, but I'm sure others could give a better advice. Congratulations on your birthday! BTW, just a heads up... I hade a couple of trousers tailored to fit when I was 16 and I thought they were gonna fit for a very long time... But as soon as I reached 19, I had gained an inch in height and combined with other factors, those trousers no longer fit me in any way... It's something important to keep in mind when you get it tailored, so it can be altered later.

18oz cloth would be good (but will seem very heavy if you are used to wearing modern fabrics).

The Dorr Mill in New Hampshire has some very nice wool. I would advise a cut of suit that would flatter your physic. Personally I would go for a double breasted jazz suit but i'm an eccentric and unless you don't mind or people are so used to you being the only one well dressed and anachronistic the attention it might bring you might be unwelcome. People can smell it if you are not confident in your dress and public personality. So if you are going to rock a 20s style suit own it and for your first go with one of the more "conservative" cuts of the era. Also do you like the early, middle or late 20s style of suits?
