When I first saw some of these felt-straw marriages my first impression was, "Hmmm, I'm not sure I like it". But they've kinda grown on me and with the right straw and felt combinations they look really good.

I thought I should repost this in a dedicated thread on Northwest hats for future reference. In case anyone didn't see it in the borsalino thread, this is a vintage borsy with a new ribbon, edge binding and sweatband done by Northwest hats. It never fit before and was resized down.

One new thing about it though. Mike told me that when he reblocked it, he noticed that it had a dimensional brim cut. I never noticed it before and so I took out my tape measure and sure enough 2 5/8ths on the sides and 2 7/8ths front and back. Dimensional cuts are usually very subtle but do add a touch of uniqueness to the look. Has anyone else ever noticed a vintage borsalino with a dimensional cut brim??

Not to mention, fedoralover, that it has a bound edge. I'd been told by people here -- quoting Art Fawcett -- and by the folks at Optimo that a bound edge was darn near impossible to do on a dimensional brim. Apparently not?

Originally the hat was just a typical thin ribbon fedora with the very narrow edge binding. So the one it has now is much wider than the original and I can tell you there are no puckers on the edge binding and the stitching is even all the way around, so I guess Mike has it figured out. Thanks for that extra info, I don't recall hearing that before.

Fedora lover, question. Is that a modern or vintage ribbon???? On the binding? That could be your answer to why he could do the binding on a dimensional cut brim. I would assume it 100% cotton and would shrink a heck of a lot more then Rayon.

I really don't know, I would have to ask Mike the next time I see him. I do know that Mike has said he does his edge bindings different than how he's seen others do it. I've never watched him so don't know what the difference is.
I know there are different ways and techniques in putting them on. I've seen some that didn't turn out so well, they were all puckered up and the sewing wasn't very even. I saw one where the ends were folded over and glued rather than sewn. It looked okay from a few feet away, but obviously upon close inspection it didn't have the sleek look of one sewn. But I prefer them sewn like most of the ones I see.

Vintage borsalino felt is very thin and floppy. I don't know how any of you hatters can put an edge binding on one and get it to look even. My congrats to all of you that can.

Talked to Mike, the ribbon on the Borsy is 50% cotton and 50% rayon. However he said he could do it with an all Rayon ribbon as well.

I just had Mike Miller make me a new hat in rabbit felt. The color is sahara with a copper ribbon. The crown height is 5 1/2 " and brim is 2 3/8". I'm really happy with the way it came out and his prices are very reasonable.

He also stamped my initials on the sweatband which was a nice surprise:
