I wonder where they make them nowadays (I have a notion it was Tunisia back in 2001 when I think it was I last bought a pair). I was very fond of my Lee Coopers back in the day.... the LC10 was the model.... closing in on twenty years ago I was buying them, while I was an undergraduate. I remember them as being half the price of 501s, and a much better fit too. I used to get a couple of years' wear out of a pair before they wore out; that was back when I wore jeans pretty much daily. I've obviously moved away from their target market in the years since (greatly amused by the notion that "slack carrot" describes a desirable fit!), but it's nice to know they're still kicking around. Bought my current denims, Freddies, on sale for forty quid, double what I once vowed I'd ever spend back in those days.... heh.

The answer is multi faceted I'm afraid.

I thought it looked good from the outset but now that I have one I'm an even bigger fan of the dakota design because while it looks, to my eyes at least, elegant and stylish it's also very practical at this length. Specifically it's good for sitting down in so driving is not an issue.

What I think makes it excel is the combination of this design and this hide. I don't think there could be a better choice as the kudu just looks and feels so right. With it on - and I'm wearing it now to help with this answer - my body is oblivious to its presence, though admittedly my arms as I type are aware of its heft - not in a problematic way; they just know its there. I think this comfort factor is a big tick as the kudu is unquestionably garment grade leather. Though I don't ride a bike if I did I would feel quite secure about the amount of leather between me and the pavement given its thickness.

The design is of course a bit different to today's stuff and does look like something from the 20s/30s. To this end I feel that the hide also looks period correct. What we have here is not a perfect (as in perfected/improved upon) reproduction of a style that once was rather we have a rough and ready finished product that looks like it was made with no leather wasted. In other words what I'm intimating at is that had this leather been on offer to a maker in the 20s/30s I think he would have used it in a similar wat to make something just like this, i.e. those scarred bits would not have been discarded, as say they probably would be by somebody like [insert fashion label here].

Given a choice between this jacket without a single scar on it and the one I've got now I'd go with this one every time. I just love it, and with it being what it is there is no temptation to baby it in any way.

In fact, I think kudu is my new favourite leather - it has everything i like leather for - and quite possibly, in time, I'll get something else in one of the other shades

thanks pipvh those do look nice but i think they're more white than they are clear. £20 seems a bit steep, though I suppose if you want quality you've gotta pay for it huh

I absolutely love the hide Schiz and the jacket looks good on you (envy creepin' in) but would you consider it a "Fall-Winter" weight jacket or a 3-season hide? You say it's flexible in its movement but could you say... work in it? You say it ss not as heavy as it looks but I worry about melting in even moderate temps under such a thick hide. I'll be VERY interested in your long-term test results.

On days that were too hot for a jacket I wore it anyway, with the air conditioning in the car turned up. 'Fortunately' with UK summers being what they are I've worn it a few times already, and I imagine I'll be wearing it some more in the coming weeks. I'd say this is a hide I can wear comfortably all year round except for when it's freezing cold. As you probably realise it's the lining that makes all the difference. The thickness of the hide doesn't seem to make any difference to its heat retaining ability, and with breathable moleskin underneath I feel very comfortable in this jacket

Schitzo- there are other shades of the Kudu? I must admit I have not noticed this on the AL site- am I missing something?

when i went there i saw light brown, dark brown and black. Those options definitely used to show on the site. Perhaps they've changed something now?

Yes, this is basically what I did too. I got a pair of TWXB01 on Tuesday but sent them back same day cos they were a little bit looser than I'd hoped for. But I could see what the necessary adjustment was and so on Wednesday after looking carefully at all the options I bought a pair of IH-555-01s which seemed to promise the best fit possible of all their models based on the measurements. Nice. They take a long time to fade, but when they do it comes out pretty amazing. Wear as long as possible between washes to speed up the process.

Schitzo had you paused you may have considered the http://www.ironheart.co.uk/bottoms/1955s.html they are exact replica's of XX501 1955 cut which means higher rear rise which means that new short jacket would sit sweetly just over them. You have got low rise skinny cut designed for the indonesian market - which should look great with your crocs.

But funny you should bring those up. I bought a pair once - from the aero sale - and they were god awful on me! Man, that fit was sooooo wrong they had to go in a hurry.

I don't know what you mean by 'Indonesian market? Are these jeans big in Indonesia?

What I like about the fit is that they're not at all baggy in any area, including the arse. They feel fitted and i think this type of fit bodes well for wearing them in nicely, no?

Ha! I'll bet the 55's would have looked great on you. See James Dean, Marlon, Elvis and every other legend for counterpoint, and the most ironic thing is you look like Tom Cruise ffs. The 55's were also Levis longest running cut until 66' when they were superseded for a year (lol) until the 67's came out and then it all went to shit. Which are what your recent denim purchase is loosely based on. But I guess on that slender body of yours you will look HAWT. And yes Iron Heart had some help in the design from their retailers out in Indonesia who put them together.

Counting out the new modern fashionable denim factories, I only know of LEE LEVIS and WRANGLER jeans, all originally made in US I believe.
I am not too picky about which brand I use, but especially LEE RIDERS 30w 32L seem to fit me best, and preferable colour is black.
Is the name Wrangler still a well known brand in US?

Wrangler are certainly still around. Aero have stocked some of their repro stuff. A lot of their current stuff is, sadly, a little derivative.

I'm with you on Lee. The repro stuff is head & shoulders above LS

In my albeit limited experience I'm a Lee fan too. Certainly they've done better by me than Levis ever did.

So of the Lee originals available on the aero site http://www.aeroleatherclothing.com/products.php?cat=denim which, if any, are the most similar fit-wise to JD's as pcitured above? With the 1955 cut iron hears i could literally fit both my legs into one leg! That type of bagginess is not a look I'm after, but JD's fit great
