Terrible idea, unless it's planned as a miniseries to allow for more detail. The 1940 John Ford film is an excellent adaptation, and a mega-classic... There's simply no need to remake it as a feature film.

Addendum: Okay, I see that Spielberg's tying up the film rights to prevent Robert Redford from making a miniseries. Hmmm... Looks like there's more to this story than just another film remake of a classic book!

I see two paths for this: 1) total CGI clusterf*** a'la the recent Great Gatsby, or 2) turning into a political statement with today's modern economy and immigration reform not-so-subtly hinted at. Either way, no thanks. I'll stick with the John Ford movie.

Totally unneeded...
However, since it will be made to appeal to modern audiences it will have lots of car crashes and explosions... (And the old truck will have a 500 HP V-8, mag wheels, and big tires)

Spielberg only ever made the rare good film by accident, imo. I loathe the mawkish, saccharine schmaltz which is his trade mark. Still, if he's doing a Peter Jackson to block Redford, that's good with me. One less Redford product is a bonus.
