makes no sense. ALWAYS get polished. The polish is good for the leather and will keep it lasting much longer. A polishing will not diminish the "shabby" look if that's a concern.

Well...regarding the "shabby boot look", it's a thing these days. You either embrace it, or revile it. Personally, I think that certain styles of work boots actually work well with a little less TLC, but not to the point where they've been neglected beyond their useful purpose.

To me they look like a relatively recent purchase that has taken a beating rather than an old pair of hard worn boots. It's probably due to the absence of the patination that polishing and conditioning brings to leather.

Agreed! Not polishing one's shoes is like not brushing one's teeth (LOL)! That ain't patina, that's rotten.

yes, there's worn and there's WORN. A good pair of old hiking/work boots (see above) with all the wax in the world will still look worn. But the uppers will hold together longer than those with no waxing.

Proper waxing will also prevent water seeping in half way up a cliff-face in winter, which will save your toes from frostbite. Damn the crampons, look after the boots!

There Back

Got my Wolverine Addison boots back from the cobbler today. Worth the wait, he did a great job, and only $45.00. He apologized for not polish them, but in all his shoe polish, he could not find a match. I went ahead and oiled them, the photos look real light, they actually are more uniform and have the nice medium brown patina of an old Baseball mitt. The last photo you can see my other 1000 Mile boots, I do keep them pretty well polished! I do need to touch them up a bit. Amazing how many comments by people that don't know me or my boots, and how wrong they are. They didn't get holes in the soles by sitting on the Lazy Boy! An expert is one who knows more and more about less and less. Butler, Nicholas.

Couldn't pass these shoes up since they were only ten dollars.

They are similar to the 1940s Supreme Norwegians I bought from Isshy. They are from Scholl. The soles are part stitched and part wood pegged. Could anybody give an age estimate? The leather is very supple, but unfortunately there is some light cracking on the left shoe. Too bad, since they are a perfect fit. But who am I to complain at this price point? Now I need better laces.

I just got my black Florsheims back from the cobbler with new heels. They should be ready for many years of further service. And gosh they polished up good.

No. My brown pair had something like taps built into the heels and soles and they made stone floors slick as ice. When my brown pair was re-soled, I believe he put on rubber grips.

I see Ish has dated your shoes for you. Let me say that I've had four pairs of Copegs, 3 NOS and one slightly used. The NOS were all sold, and the buyers, to a person, raved about the shoes. Two of them said they were their favorite pair of shoes. Great find.
