Looking for a "Bogie" hat on a budget..

Anyone know where I can get a reasonably priced "Bogart" style Fedora without paying several hundred?

Any help would be most appreciated

Many people here have bought hats from hatsdirect, it is a reputable online Akubra dealer. They have some that are Bogie like for under $200.

Most currently made lower-cost hats are dismissed as junk by serious hatfolk, but for less-discerning ordinary mortals, there are plenty of perfectly serviceable fur felt fedoras in the around-$100 range. For example, there's a big selection at

Thanks guys, yeah I am just looking for a bargan lid right now, will probably move up to something nicer later, but I have a trip coming up and well I want something to keep my head warm, but I also like that "classic" look from the 40s. would go good with my leather trench coat

I have bought hats from the aboue. In my HO. i would buy the Akubra over any thing Miller sells for the money they are a great hat i have 6 of them.

yeah I noticed those hats are pretty nice, not to bad of a price either.

I got an Akubra Federation from Hatsdirect last year, and I think the shipping to the US was about $30, given the exchange rate at the time.

I will say this about the Akubra Fed vs. all the other fedoras I've handled over the years: it's definitely the toughest. It's not at all floppy - it's more akin to a western hat than a dress hat: you can tell that these guys make outback hats. It feels more like a cut-down cowboy hat than a fedora, IMHO.

That's certainly not a bad thing, but it wasn't quite what I was expecting... But there's no question that for the price, it's a total steal - and it will probably outlast me!

I will say this about the Akubra Fed vs. all the other fedoras I've handled over the years: it's definitely the toughest. It's not at all floppy - it's more akin to a western hat than a dress hat: you can tell that these guys make outback hats. It feels more like a cut-down cowboy hat than a fedora, IMHO.

Mine was stiff at first but after a few rains it is nice a soft now. The other Akubra hats were all dress and not as stiff as the Federation right out of the box. I still say they are better than most of the junk you see out here now. New factory hats that is.

The Bogart is good, but may I suggest the Cagney? It is 2 1/4 welted brim and therefore a bit samller than the Bogart, but it is one tough little hat(and it looks good on)....also the same price.

Doctor Strange would look great in a bogie style hat. In fact, with the right lid, he'll be doing work as a double for Dan Akroyd in the upcoming film Blues Brothers 2!

With my wide face (etc.), I actually prefer hats with wider brims than Bogart-style fedoras, but thanks for the thought!

Duce -- Looks like someone already recommended the village hat shop here in San Diego. They sell all sorts of fedoras and have their own brand name fur felts, including one called the Bogart, another the Cagney, and one called the Fairbanks (I don't know if that is after Jr. or Sr.). They are below $100.

Do you live near San DIego?

Duce -- Village Hat Shop used to have a store on the 4th tier of Horton Plaza mall, which is down near the Gaslamp. They closed that shop, and opened one in Hillcrest on 4th Avenue. There is also the original shop in Seaport Village.

They also have shops in Sacramento and one in Long Beach, which might be even closer to you. It is on Shoreline Village Drive, phone number is on website.

Another hat shop in the Gaslamp that now carries mostly fedoras is The Hat Works, which once was Western Hat Works. It has been around since 1922 and recently changed its name to Hat Works. Some nice fur felts for around $100, also now being managed by two nice Hispanic men. The owner I recalled was an absolute curmudgeon, but seems to have retired and left the management to the nice guys I encountered when I visited the store a few weeks ago. Used to be 90% cowboy hats, now has mostly fedoras.

Duce, I don't know what your hat size is, but if it's not extraordinarily large, I'd seriously consider taking some time to find a vintage one on ebay. For $100 on ebay you can get a vintage fedora that's 10 times the quality of a new one at the same price. I just bought a vintage playboy stetson that looks like it has never been worn, from the late 40s to early 50s for a whopping price of $22.00. It is better than my Optimo that I paid $350.00 for.
