From about 1960 on you could legitimately say that a push-feed action was cheaper to build. However, since CNC machinery has become universal and easily cuts tolerances of +/- nuttin', there really isn't any reason for building them except in the case where MOA accuracy makes sense. Since the heart on a Cape buffalo is at least the size of a normal man's head and since the whole idea behind hunting dangerous game is to get as close (and dangerous) as possible, I'd rather have controlled feed, especially since you get striker-block safeties that way. I really, really don't like trigger-block safeties . . .

So, yeah, look for a nice custom 98. You'll be happier in the long run. Shoot, you might even live longer . . .

I really appreciate all your help gentlemen. I'm on the hunt (ha!) for a Mauser action in 30-06, and a .375 Pre-64 Winchester M70 or a CZ 550. Sound about right? Oh, left out that I've been shooting a P14 Enfield Sporter in .303 for hogs thus far.

Sounds good to me. Those two calibers easily cover the world. The two after that should be some string-straight shooting plains rifle and a really BIG thumper if you're as nervy around things that bite back as I am. "When in elephant country, carry an elephant rifle."--Terry Wieland.

Hi Justin

If you can find a CZ with the hump backed stock at a gun show, try it in at least standing and kneeling position. Several friends tried it out and my daughter liked the fit much better than the straight American stock. Unless you've tried it on (so to speak), it just looks weird, but you hold your head up straight shooting offhand. It won't matter if it's a .22LR, a .223, a .30-06 or a .458 Winchester, the stock shape is the same.

Oh, I like a bit of kick. Most of my very long range shooting is done with my .338 or a buddy's .50 BMG, both of which hit like Tyson. I've got an acquaintance who he and his wife both go on safari annually, her for the shooting, him for the animals (he's a wildlife artist) so I'm really looking forward to getting to go. My godfather lives in Kenya, so I'm thinking that might be the place I start.

*edit* Also thinking about picking up a lever 30-30. Thoughts?

The only hunting you can do in Kenya is for birds. The government closed safari hunting to keep tourist hunters from seeing the ivory slaughter the mayor of Nairobi was backing. The result was a devaluation of wildlife and a general drop in game populations from poaching and conflict with agriculture. They still haven't recovered.

There are lots of better safari countries. Buzz on down to the Dallas Safari Club convention next January and talk to people.

Hi

I own a CZ-452 American .22LR. The CZ 550 Safari Magnum has a hump backed stock that is the best fit I've seen for offhand shooting and it doesn't make any difference / problems shooting in Prone or Kneeling position. The Safari version comes in .375 H&H magnum. The CZ 550 Medium is the same shape but only comes in 7mm Mag. I thought that CZ did have a 550 in .30-06, but I haven't found it on their sight yet.

I would second the CZ recommendations if you want a good out of the box new rifle. Back when my family was hunting in Alaska for several years we got a bunch of CZ rifles, my dad got an excellent 9.3x62, my brother in law a 375, and I've used a CZ-452 in 22 mag for my plinking and practice rifle for about 5 years now. Getting a 22 rifle for practice and then a "medium bore" (in the American sense not the British-African use of the term): 30-06, 270, 7mm, etc. that is in a similar/identical configuration (stock design, scope etc.) is a great way to get ready for hunting. That is why I like the CZ-452 and the stock that 1961MJS mentions, most of my hunting rifles are European single shots/drillings which have the same humpback design he mentions so it helps to practice with a 22 in a similar configuration.

Having said that I am on the look out for a classic Mauser sporter in 276...

Finally...it has arrived!

New condition, Whitworth express rifle chambered for the venerable Three-Seven-Five Holland and Holland. It's much more balanced and less clunky than the Winchester 70 (safari express) that I owned & sold a few years ago. The Whitworth will be heading to the gunsmith soon for a safety inspection and to polish the feed ramp & rails. Might also shorten the L.O.P. just a bit. In the meantime, I guess I'll reload some brass.

I won't publish my best load because it's 'way too hot for most, but my Whitworth just loves IMR 4350 at 2600+ ft. sec. behind a 300 gr. Nosler Partition. Thumbnail sized groups at 100 yards and things hit kind of 'boom-flop'. Great rifles!

I like that bottom rifle!! Reminds me of a nice sporter my oldest son had ( mfg in '52) in .257 Bob. I coveted that rifle and told him if he ever wanted to sell it lemme know. Well he had some unexpected doctor bills as a result of a sausage grinder mishap one evening. And he sold it. I was pretty hot to say the least!!!!

Btw, if he ever offers you any deer sausage, might think twice before accepting!

Went by a couple local gunshops after work, was a bit disappointed with what they had, may have to make a trip further afield to find what i want. Did find a place that will do FFL transfers though if I need it. Only Model 70 I found was a .308, and the only 30-06 I found was a Weatherby, but not a Mark V. The guy at one store was trying to sell me on a Tikka T3, but I don't know anything about them so I was iffy. Still on the hunt. Oh, and this weekend I'll snap some pics of my P14 Sporter.

Any large gun shows down your way? Might find a much better selection to look over.

Oddly, just about 20 minutes ago a friend calls me and tells me about a dealer just up the road from my office that has a pre-64 M70 in 30-06 up for sale. Called the guy and I'm going during my lunch hour to pick it up!

Now that just goes to show . . . I like the top rifle better. In fact, I love it! I wonder if Schilling will still make them in that configuration . . .

Got it. It's in pretty decent shape. Only real issue is some guy put his name and phone number on the thing with an electric pencil. Did come with a pachmayr scope and flip down mount so you can use the iron sites without completely removing it.
