The ruins of the golden era.
Given your background, do you not have sympathy for people who are facing similar circumstances that you once did and therefore cannot eat or have shelter? Or do you believe that food and shelter are not basic rights? Why have you stated that no one is entitled to having those basic things- i.e. get someplace in life/ be self-supporting if they are under 40?

Really, it's sounds like you're taking a basic statement- someone being able to support themselves- and thinking that people are entitled to want to be able to do that under 40. If you have children, I certainly hope you haven't raised them to believe that they cannot support themselves before age 40 and aren't planning on supporting them until then. Really, you know nothing of someone's circumstances and are taking a simple statement that they are having difficulty supporting themselves and turning it into an entitled attitude just because they haven't reached an arbitrary age.

If somebody at age 41 was complaining about not being able to put food on their table or shelter over their head, is it less entitled than someone saying that at age 39?

ETA: I am very glad to hear that you are a success story given your background. :) Don't ever assume someone doesn't care- I am sure that when you were homeless, hungry, and down and out- lots of people surprised you with how much they cared. And I am sure, given your background, you must be extremely charitable and kind with your success. Remember to always put your money to charity first- then your bills. There are always people who need it much more than you.

Why and how would food and shelter be a basic right? Do people have the right to a particular food? Does the right to food mean a right to have a satisfying meal? Does the right to shelter mean a two story home or just a ranch?

I believe no child should be hungry, cold, or without a stable home environment. I don't believe that a child should be denied an opportunity at a free secondary education. I don't believe anyone should go without basic medical care, regardless of ability to pay. No one should be homeless. No one should be hungry. No one should have to stay in an abusive relationship because otherwise they would not be fed, clothed, or sheltered. It's just a fundamental set of beliefs that you either have or don't.

We do our own part to make sure that people (particularly children) in our community are fed, sheltered, clothed, etc. At some point my husband and I would like to become foster parents. (Likely only when we are older and can commit to raising children that might have emotional issues. Ideally I'd like to take on siblings that would otherwise be separated by the system, and that is a commitment. We need to do more research on it, but everything we have researched and the people we have spoken to so far have made us only more interested and excited in it. ETA: We'd also have to have any biological children be older than the foster children we would possibly have.) We regularly give school supplies, clothing, money, and food to a rural at-need district.

Like I said, it's either something you believe strongly in (and therefore invest in) or you don't. It is really that simple. But yes, some of us do believe that no one should go hungry, die because they cannot afford medical care, or live on the street.

Why is someone else entitled to my paycheck? Should my own family be entitled to my paycheck?
I have no problem helping those in need, but the needs of my family come first.

I believe that one should voluntarily give some of one's pay to charity. My philosophy is partially based on the idea of tithing and partially on the ideals of "alms to the poor." In other words, charity should just be something that is seen as something you plan on giving some of your income to, AND the fact that someone is always worse off than you are.

I have always done this if at all possible, even when I made very very little and was digging through dumpsters to feed myself. There were a lot of people out there far far less fortunate than me. I have always decided what I could afford based upon paying charity first. If you make giving a priority, rather than a secondary concern, I think more people would give to charity. I really really do. I have always based my financial decisions on the fact that a certain portion of my income basically doesn't exist to my family. On the flip side, by doing this we've always lived way under our means. So when issues arose for us (lay offs, health issues, etc.) we've never immediately been in a bind because we always had under-budgeted. Of course, I'm always loathe to cut giving.

As I'm in my senior year of high school, I have to deal with a lot of lovely types who always poke fun at the suits (Despite my repeated stating that it's what REAL men wear) and those who ask such thought-out questions such as:
"When was the War of 1812?"
"Is Switzerland in Germany?"
"Oh the Cold War? I know somebody who fought in that!"
Then there are those who shouldn't even bother attending since all they do is text and sleep, talking about how high they get on the weekends and contributing nothing to the class.
I just can't comprehend what goes on in their minds. [huh]
