To the original poster: there are easily a half-dozen (and probably more) "I'm coming to NYC; where should I dine/shop/etc.?" threads that contain a wealth of info.
I'll admit that, living in a place like NYC that so many people want to visit (and we're happy to have you!), one grows a little weary of typing up the same list of worthy establishments again and again (I've been guilty more than once of copying and pasting mine). Maybe a "Visiting NYC" thread that ties together the info from all the various "Where should I go?" threads would be worthwhile, especially if we could get future visitors to NYC to use it and not start their new thread. The Meetup thread's valuable to those of us who live here, but I can see the value in an "NYC for Lounge Tourists" thread, too.

Hmm I thought it took a while to get responses and here was me thinking that members were 'playing poker' and not letting on which shops are good for the kind of stuff I seek, when in fact some were thinking "here we go again".
My apologies skyvue but I tried a search for NYC and New York on the Fedora Lounge and did not come up with threads with recommendations/lists of places to buy, so I started this thread which mirrors the excellent and current 'London Heads Up' thread, (which seems to fit the sort of meta thread model you suggest but for London not NYC). Of course these types of thread are readily available on Google but lack the recommendations of members whose opinions I'd trust more than possible sock puppeteers. So far this thread has given me some interesting pointers for which I'm very grateful. I hope others have found it helpful too and that further recommendations are forthcoming. Cheers Rob

Any Loungers in the area are CORDIALLY invited to a loosely 50s themed Potluck Picnic this afternoon at Hudson River park, Pier 63 on the lower west side of Manhattan. From 2PM till, mmmm , maybe 6 or 7?

I've never been there, but I read that it's pricey because their clientele are usually people who work in fashion trying to find stuff to make patterns or new creations with, almost similar to the way Cheap Jacks liked to do business in my opinion.

It's a completely different vintage clothing store than Expensive Jacks, it is not full of 70's polyester, it's a a small store that has great vintage workwear from the 20s-50s and yes, it is pricey.

Secondhand and Vintage in New York by Debra Johnston Cobb
Discovering Vintage New York by Mitch Broder
Its a case of 'what it says on the tin' - the Cobb book is full of where to buy stuff with reviews and the Broder book suggests which places to visit with reviews. The excellent advice in this thread from members and these two books have solved my problem of where to go and where to buy.

Well I made it - I'm in NYC. Spent our first full day visiting Grand Central Station, MOMA - joined as that was less expensive in cash and time queuing for the four of us in the party and on the Hop on hop off bus tour. We had breakfast at Captains Cafe on 32nd street - great food and really friendly. This is without doubt the best place I've ever been to on holiday. We Brits see so much of the US on tv and in films that it's really quite comfortable and familiar to us. I am going to take some of the above advice and visit Reminiscence (74 5th Ave at some point tomorrow) and not 745 5th Avenue where the Sat Nav took me today - what a disappointment that was! Thanks again for the advice you gave me in this thread earlier this year.

The New York City Opera Thrift Shop has a pair of Knoll tables by Marcel Breur in the right hand window. I didn't ask the price but new retail is around $1000 for the pair. Sadly they won't fit in my suitcase so good luck to anyone here who is interested. I've ''trawled' around six such stores this week but this was by far the best find. I bought only vintage one item - from Reminiscence, a 6' long vintage 'aviators' heavy quality white silk scarf for $6 - bargain! My best new purchase was a pair of Levi 501s in the new 'stay warm' range - the denim has woollen fibres incorporated for extra warmth but it gives extra flexibility and comfort too. In addition the Levi shops here are currently running a 40% discount offer for purchases over $250. We bought $250 of stuff and got $100 discount. Home to the UK tomorrow - Goodbye Manhattan it's been fantastic.
