Yeah, there is a dearth of topcoats in the market today. It appears that they've been usurped by the raincoat. Years ago one wouldn't think of wearing a raincoat unless there was rain in the forecast. Maybe it was Bogie who killed the topcoat.
I'm sure you're right here. Such topcoats, though around until the 1970s (and Dinerman has obtained a fine one) were being eclipsed by the raincoat much earlier; I remember having an argument with my father when he told me to put on a raincoat to go out on a cool but dry day - I said that a raincoat was not worn for warmth but he wouldn't have it!
