I have a National HRO, which is one of the legendary intercept receivers from WWII. When I fired it up for the first time I heard an unidentified station sending five-letter groups in CW. :eeek:

That reminds me of a 1961 episode of The Twilight Zone called "Static", which involves an old radio receiving signals over twenty years old.
I couldn't find the episode on YouTube, but here's a clip from it:

Love those National sets. I've still got an early HRO (3 digit serial number and 2.5 v tubes)' a little FB-7, and an SW-5.

Outstanding ! I have a nice 1-10 VHF set and a 1-10A.
There was a great deal of thought put into the design of the National tube sets. You have to love the doghouse power supplies, the micrometer dials, and the HRO's coil rack band switching.
The HRO is still competitive 70+ years after its debut. :eusa_clap

The National "Doghouse" power supply was designed by Jim Millen in 1927 as a "B" eliminator. Unfortunately rather few were sold in the "B" eliminator configuration. I have a nice example which is
