Conversion candidate from a customer next to my 1889 cap, and my first look as an 1898 US Army soldier (shitty mirror shot, I know, we have bad weather for real outdoor photos at the moment)

Max, you look the part! The hat is, of course, sublimely well done! When my hat budget goes back up I'll contract an M1889 from you! Terrific work as always.

Made this grey hat Worf sent me to convert, which I kept since I sent him one his size, as an M1883. Color is all wrong, and the ribbon is olive drab but I figured I'd finish it for completeness sake. The stitching is by hand since my machine brokedown. It's okay. It's done.

Dean,

Not bad, especially for hand done. This would pass for an old salt in the field. I certainly wouldn't think it would stand out at all. You may want to turn this one into a marked up one, like some that have been seen "field altered" with dates and quotes from relevant battles.

Also, I have a 7 3/4 that just came in for conversion, which will be available for sale as an 1889 in a week or so. Anyone interested?

Could the 7 3/4 be stretched or re-blocked up to 7 7/8?

If you're interested in the hat I could send it to you to be fitted locally, possibly have the sweatband replaced if being re-blocked, and then you could send it back to me for conversion.

I'd have to find someone here who could re-block and do the sweatband. I know of only one place to call - let me see if they can do it. Of course, if it sells in the meantime, don't tell someone else no.

try one of those hat stretchers , on ebay , i think they reach to 77/8

I am not even close to an expert on these types of hats, but I came across this hat at a local antique mall the other day. It is supposedly a Drill Sargent hat from the Vietnam War era. Size 7 1/8 I believe. If anyone has any interest I will check whether it is still available or I can give you their contact info.

I have never seen genuine M1883 vents personally, and my best guess is that these are just as likely as any to be accurate. I used a pair on a hat I modified for Worf, ( which I neglected to photograph before I sent it to him.) They're probably the best you can find. I've read that no existing M1883 is available. Tough to say without at least and image of a vintage hat.
