Only drawback to this one was that the original owner was a smoker and it reeks like cigarette smoke ,I am wonder if anyone can recommend a treatment to get rid of the smell or do you think it was subside over time ?
People says put it in a plastic bag with newspapers inside and let it be there for some days.

Frank and Rolo - great hats.

Frank - with felts I'd recommend liberally dusting with bicarb of soda, leaving for a while then brushing off. It might not work as well with straw, but I can't see it doing any harm.

Garrett, that is some refurbishment, a credit to you.

Rolo, you have caused me to sin. I am now guilty of jealousy, envy & covet. Fabulous hat man.

Frank, I've never had to have a hat cleaned, but my local dry cleaners do it, and they gave me a web site with some good hat cleaning tips on it, I hope that this helps:
Cleaning a straw hat.

Garrett, that long hair is amazing.

Rolo, nice Panama!

After getting left in the dust for that sweet taaallll nutria western bowler on ebay (I hope that shows up here!) I couldn't resist a little seasonal optimism, and won this Pantropic. It needed a little massage, but I'm really happy with it. I forgot to photograph the cloth sweatband. The weave is quite nice, but not nearly as fine as my other montecristi, but I'm glad to have some extra crown and brim with which to play.

So far, because of a deep flange, the brim didn't look quite right down in front, so I've left it upturned.

Garrett, Fantastic Velour! I remember seeing it but can't recall the maker.

Frank, Very nice stingy Milan!

Rolo, Same with your Panama Direct Panama!

Jeff, The Pantropic looks great brim up! Hopefully it will bring warmer temps!

+1 - not least as the parties, who are directly involved, don't have a problem over this issue

Scottf was a complete gentleman about the whole situation, and as I note, the hat really is a nice one. I wanted to acknowledge that publicly!

Thanks, Aaron. If you are seriously considering sending it for re-blocking, please just send it back to me instead and I'll either steam it for you or give you a refund.

I've been a member here long enough to know how quickly those who are not involved will take a thread south, and I am certain that was not your intent, as you never even posted my name or handle, but that is the nature of internet forums and this one is still a lot more civil than most. Actually, probably the most civil of any I've participated on.

+1 re this is :eek:fftopic: if parties have a disagreement such as this, take it offline into the messaging functionality of the Lounge and leave the rest of us out of it. Sound good?

The parties aren't having a disagreement - the parties are doing just fine, and the parties have been communicating via email. You were never in it until you placed yourself in it. I won't be responding to any more of the drama.

Here's my newest pick-up. I had it for sale, as it's a bit small for me, but I am keeping it, as the oval is a bit too round for a normal head. I've had two from the 1950's, with this same exact style and color, by two different makers, in the same condition. I'm thinking that maybe olive-brown bound-brim westerns were a common dress hat in the '50s, which would explain their condition when found?

Must Agree

I must agree that that is what I find to be most refreshing here on this Forum,I was a moderator on a clothing Forum and got so sick of the infighting what went on so I stepped down .
What I like the most about this Forum is that 99% of the members act like total gentlemen and at the very least will agree to disagree.

All the Best, Fashion Frank

I just wanted to thank you for this post. I have a bit of an obsession for Para/Bali buntal straw and all the contemporary examples I have seen are crap. So this leaves me the only option of being on the lookout for vintage Parabuntals which seem few and far between. I missed out on a recent Ebay listing though I bid higher than I thought it should go for and lost to a fellow lounger. So I was excited when I read your post about "the body is from a 60 year old batch." I immediately contacted Mr. Moore hoping their might be more from the batch and indeed there are. I believe they are all blocked similarly which is fine with me judging from your posted photos. Perhaps you have retrieved it by now from the post office and have lived with it for a few days. I hope to complete my transaction with Buckaroo in the next few days. I have a nice fur felt of theirs which I got from EBay in off white with a black brim binding which. though a little stiffer than I prefer, I like a lot.
It was 12 degrees here in Western Massachussetts last night so its not quite Straw Season yet but without your post and photo I wouldn't have had a clue so again, many thanks.

You are absolutely right, this is an enjoyable, civilised site. I haven't made any further comment before, as per the mods instructions, just let the mood cool. but now seems the right time to say sorry. It wasn't my hat and therefore, not my problem. Apologies to you and to other members for not keeping my nose out of the affairs of others.

You are more than welcome, and I'm happy to hear, you got one of the remaining Parabuntals. Yes, I have collected my two new straws and my vintage grey Strat at the post office, but unfortunately it hasn't been straw-weather here, either. I promise you, that you won't regret your buy. It's a truly magnificent hat, that got me a lot of nice comments in the streets of Nashville. A joy to wear! Congratulations ;)
