How to Know if You're in The Right Bar

Any bar where the bartender knows what "neat" is. (My expectations have been lowered over the years)

Around here if I ask for something "straight", they usually give me a shot glass. If I ask for "neat", 8 out of 10 times they don't know what that means. I've been asked if I lost a bet when ordering a Wild Turkey on the rocks. The main question for most people at a bar around here seems to be Bud Light, or Miller Lite, or Coors Light.

You ordered whiskey on the rocks?! :faint:

"how to know you're in the right bar"....As I have not been in one since I have been married, that is not an easy answer today. However, one clue may be on the "right bar" part could be, everyone has clothing on! Another clue, not everyone is the same "gender". Lastly one to think of, they accept US Currency!

As to the actually "drinking" part of good bars. If you notice some bars or nightclubs have the machines that are linked some how to your bill, the automated lines for making drinks, everything goes from a "tube line" from a container of "booze" and container or "mix" right into the glass, the bar tender simple hits some buttons on his little hand held gizmo and shoots it into your glass. Stop to think of what may have just gone through the head of that gizmo from the last drink he made? I would tend to think a good bar would have a bartender that you do not have to explain what goes into a drink. He or she should know the difference between a Manhattan and a Singapore Sling, without explaining which of those two drinks should really have a small touch of white powdered sugar added before being mixed. My Husband having been in the US Navy, has given me a great deal of information of what drinks and bars do around the world. He would joke and say if a bar was a one fly bar, that was one fly too many.

When it's got a "Hemmingway Bar" sign behind the bar with all of two Ms... And it's actually the Masindi bar where Hemingway nursed himself back to tottering health after a plane crash in Murchison Falls, in Uganda.

Unfortunately, the spirits' shelf today is as good as the orthography...
