I recently built my own corset using Simplicity 9789 and the advice in this corset building community http://corsetmakers.livejournal.com/. Mine is a Victorian/Civil War era corset. It's made of coutil with steel boning and I'm quite pleased with how it fits. I'm not an hourglass shape at all, even when I was young and thin I was more straight up and down, now my measurements are 42" bust, 38" waist and 45" hips. I love the reduction I get with the corset, I can reduce 5 inches. Since mine is a victorian type corset that squishes the fat up and down, it only works with certain types of clothing--I do still have a belly with it, since the fat needs to go somewhere. I'm looking into making an Edwardian corset next, it has a longer line and gives a sleeker silhouette.
I find my corset fairly comfortable, even with the steel boning. I really like how it helps me have better posture, I have a terrible slump, always have and it was worse after having kids. When I've worn it, there is a noticeable difference in my figure, and I tell people it's because of the corset, not some amazing quick weight loss, and I've had people joke about enduring torture, but it isn't tortuous at all.

I'm very interested in waist training (and improving my posture!), and would like to know if I should go for any particular type of corset? I have never worn one before. I'm willing to save up for a decent corset, I currently have my eyes on Morticia by What Katie Did. Any suggestions (that I can buy in the UK) would be greatly appreciated.

Does anyone have any advice for keeping a corset from showing under fitted clothing? I'm mostly just concerned about the laces showing in the back. I know they had little waspies in the 50s, and What Katie Did offers a pretty period accurate version, but I'm not sure I want to spend quite that much on my first go round. I'd like to reduce a little bit to maximize my options when it comes to vintage clothing, since there seems to be so much out there in that 24-25 inch waist range, but I'm not sure it's worth it if the line is disrupted by the corset.
I've been considering the Meschantes training corset (although I've heard very mixed reviews) or one of the level 3 underbusts from orchardcorset.com

Laces can be tucked in easily, either through the lacing panel or hidden underneath other areas of the corset, depending on how it fits you. More of a concern for a seamless look is the height of the corset. If the corset is too long for your torso, the busk may jut out at the bottom and be very obvious under clothes, so be sure to check measurements well.
I've heard a lot of bad things about Meschantes and personally wouldn't bother giving them a chance, but Orchard get consistently great reviews and seem to be a great place to start. However, do keep an eye on eBay for What Katie Did corsets, as sometimes they pop up at good prices. I'm currently waiting for my WKD Mae Extreme to arrive, and have had Morticia for a while. Their corsets are definitely worth the money.

Lucy's Corsetry is where I heard about Orchard Corsets, actually. She gave them a really good review, and the prices are just insanely good.
I will keep an eye out for discounted WKDs. They look great, and I appreciate the recommendation from someone who has experience with them.

Hey, I'm in the process of getting a custom corset from Fiorella Corsetry from the UK - a victorian underbust training corset. I'll let you know how it goes and post pictures up when it arrives. Im so excited about it and really happy to be using a small corsetiere rather than ordering through a website, although I've also heard good things about Orchard Corsets Lucy Corsetry has such an amazing wealth of knowledge about corsets - I'd really recommend either her videos or her blog for anyone looking to get into corsetry or even anyone who just has an interest in it

I bought an underbust corset from Orchard Corset last year. Since then I've lost quite a bit of weight and what I used to lace down to is what my actual waist is now! I fell in love with a waspie from Orchard Corset but does anyone know if it's short length will give me, I guess, a reverse-muffin top?

It's possible you'll get reverse-muffin top from a waspie, but it depends on your torso length. It's best to check the corset's maximum height against your own measurements. Measure from your underbust (where your bra band sits) downwards, and you'll be able to see where your potential corset will end. If you have a shorter torso, a waspie will likely cover you well enough to prevent any 'pooch'. But if your torso is longer, you may be better off with a standard underbust. However, everyone's body is different, and moves differently, so I'd say if there's something you've fallen in love with give it a go. You can always return it if it doesn't work out.

I just got my first two corseted in the mail as a gift from my fiancé (no he didn't think I needed them lol I would have killed him) I had been discussing waist training with him or awhile now and thy came as. Surprise yesterday!! I'm very excited to get started. They are satin on the outside and self lacing once I pull in theback. Rather comfortable for what they are lol

my fiorella custom is getting finished this weekend and should get to me in a couple of weeks and i also couldnt help but order a custom pattern (but standard sized) underbust from Retro Folie as well she does amazing pattern matching and can print fabric and pattern matcch it for any historical painting you choose for a very reasonable price which i'm super excited about! Has anyone ever bought corsets from Corset Story? I can't really afford a custom one right now and some of their off the rack ones are on sale for a reasonable price. Are they any good? Or should I just stick with Orchard Corset?
