I stopped by the Stetson Outlet Store in St. Joseph Mo this morning and hung out with two nice old ladies who used to work in the factory when they had one there. I purchased two flat caps there one Dobb's and one Stetson. 10 buck for the Dobb's and 15 for the Stetson out in the rain flat cap. I also picked of a felt Dobb's black Pork Pie stingy brim out of the 10 dollar hat trunk. It has a leather head band a black Gross grain band and is lined with satin. Pretty good day I thought.

I've never heard of a Stetson outlet store. I wish there were one here in the Washington, D.C. area.

I went up to the St. Joseph outlet today to pickup my first fedora hats. The store is fairly small in the interior. About 3/4 of it has been given over to "western" hats and some clothing. A smaller portion of their stock is the classic fedora style.

They are running a sale right now - $25 each for a large amount of their fedoras. I picked up two Dobbs sized 7 1/2, one Dayton in graphite and one Dutton in cordova, a rich dark brown-reddish. They had less than a dozen fedoras at 7 1/2 in the shop and I only found one 7 5/8 and then that one was not on sale. I was going to also get a brown 7 1/2 Royal Stetson on sale, but the brim had a defect and didn't lay right.

They also had a bin of big-discount fedoras and two chests of flat caps.

Although I didn't examine all of their fedoras, as far as I could tell they were virtually all overstock hats with no flaws. The one Royal Stetson I found with the brim defect was the exception. As far as the sale that is ongoing, one of the ladies who worked there told me that they were just making room for new incoming stock.

Went to the Stetson Factory Outlet Today

The one in St. Joseph, MO. It had been several years since my last visit. I have to say, I was impressed with their selection of nice fur felt fedoras! Sure it's the factory outlet so it makes sense, but last time I was there, the tiny selection of fedoras was highly disappointing. In fact, I'm not sure they had any fur felt fedoras at all last time! Quite a few junk wool hats for under a C note. The focus was almost exclusively on westerns.
SO, this visit was far better. They now have a wide selection of current fur felts, I almost couldn't believe it was the same store! They had the majority of the current production fedoras in stock, in every color. The open road was, however, conspicuously absent.
I got what I was there for, which was a silver belly Stratoliner. I picked it up at a seriously deep discount (already marked, they don't accept offers) because the sweat was sewn in a little off center. I don't mind because the hat is as comfortable as any I've owned, and nobody can see the sweat when I wear the hat anyway! There were even derbies in stock. Not my style, but they seemed quite well made.
I feel that Hatco has really stepped up to the plate. I didn't touch a new stetson for many years because, quite frankly, I considered them junk. No more! If anyone has cause to Visit St Joseph, the Stetson outlet is well worth a visit. I'll try to post pics if my new strat a bit later.

Now I'll find out how the modern Stetsons hold up in the elements.

I my experience, there is quite a bit of felting with the new Stetsons. Also, the felt does not seem to hold up to well with daily wear. I have sold my newer Stetson hats and bought either custom or vintage hats. Not the cheap route, but I am not disappointed either. For an inexpensive daily hat to take elements, I would recommend Akubra.
