Just found this pre-war color photo of Jimmy Stewart that I find quite inspirational as summer approaches. What I especially like is that this combination wouldn't occur to me, but it looks great.

That is a sharp look, wonder what the jacket is about? Wool, linen, silk? Hard to tell. But sure looks nice.

I agree, it looks good. It wouldn't have occurred to me either, probably because of the vest. That shade of yellow doesn't particularly appeal to me.

If it were linen, it would have a more, lived in look, and it's too sharp to be silk, so wool it probably is.
Stewart carries off the look with aplomb, but I wouldn't attempt it, I would however, wear that outfit with a sports blazer, adding a bleach coloured Borsalino Quito Panama Fedora hat.

The jacket is a nubby wool tweed. I think it he might be wearing the coat from this suit as an odd jacket.

Exactly. I've contemplated buying a yellow sweater vest a few times, but I could never figure out how to integrate it with outfits. In my opinion, what make the whole thing work is that dark (black?) tie. I might need a Shetland wool vest now...

I think the tie is probably a really dark green, which works so well with the jacket.

One thing for sure, Jimmy was very young in these pictures and when all you "men" were younger, you could pull off wearing attire of sorts, much easier than when you are somewhat older. I do not think Jimmy (from these pictures) even had to worry about what razor to use shaving....perhaps a mere "peach fuzz" at best.

In Germany a yellow sweater is immediately associated with Hans-Dietrich Genscher (1974-92 German foreign minister) and his Free Democratic Party (now almost vanished into obscurity).

One of his trademark yellow sweater vests was auctioned off for 4700 USD.

As a man who knew how to dress, Jimmy Stewart flies a bit under the radar versus Cary Grant and others from Hollywood's Golden Era, but that is an oversight. Both in his movies and in the pictures of him away from his movies, it is clear he enjoyed dressing and did it very well and with his own personal style.

Also, Guttersnipe - great find and I think you are right - it looks to be a suit separate. What a wonderful suit.

Does that jacket have four path pockets? That dark line on the right breast appears to be the shadow of pocket opening.

If it is the same jacket from the three-piece suit, then, it appears to have three patch pockets.

I have a serious question! I like the spezzato style of mixing trousers, vests, and jackets. The main colour of my outfit is often dark blue because it flatters my complexion. Brown fedora goes well with a blue jacket and beige pants. Beige, on the other hand, looks good with burgundy shoes. My question is, however, if I should avoid combining burgundy shoes and brown hat. What do you think?

I assume with the blue jacket and beige pants? If so, that is a lot going on. 4 items you are wearing, 4 different colours....what is the focal point?

I guess the jacket dominates. However, listing all colors already implied the answer: brown is more neutral than burgundy.

My bias is to have a minimum 'going on'. So with beige pants, brown shoes, brown hat even though different shades of brown there is a unifying theme.....and the jacket becomes the focal point.

Compliments to you on finding this thread, the last entry before your's being 2014. Spezzato style can work but I do take Belfast Boy's focal point comment.

This is how I mix a multicoloured outfit, notice that all the colours are from a similar spectrum going from the dark brown of the hat to tan and white of the shoes.
