I've been thinking about making another homemade necktie. How long and wide are the average late 40's bold look neckties? According to Wikipedia the average bold look tie was 48 inches long, by 5 inches wide, but I wanted to check here to be sure. How long from the tip of the wide part, is it till the tie becomes the thin part which you put around your neck?

Not true,here is a really wide Bold look 5 inch hand painted necktie by hollyvogue.

And don't get me started on my 6 1/2 inch 1910s neckties

The 70s Just copied everything from previous decades and made made them ugly

Yes but on average they were under 5 inches in the 1940s.

I believe I misinterpreted the Wikipedia page. It says:

4.5'' is my current homemade's width. At what inch does the tie stop getting thinner? I messed up my first homemade tie by using a modern scale for that.

Works for me. Leave boring tie making to the professionals.

I would go with a 4 1/2" tie width. That way you can take full advantage of the pattern without being overly blousy.

A few years ago, my grandfather died and left all his worldly possessions, including a bunch of old ties. The last time I was in El Paso, I decided to take his ties. (I would have taken his suits too, but my luggage is only so big.) Here are some pictures of some of my favorites.

They're all 4 inches wide, except for the orange one. That one is 4.25. I'm pretty sure that all of these are forties ties, but my grandfather lived a long life. I should probably mention that my grandfather was a very understated man. He prefered subtlety and simplicity both in his mannerisms, and his dress. That might be why I never saw him wearing these (Of course, it might just have been that he was well into his 80's, and just couldn't be arsed). Still, cool ties. Hope I helped in your quest for the perfect Bold Look tie, Mr. Spectator.

It seems that the majority of the 40's ties were in the 4'' range.

They just showed up. They all look like nice ties. I especially like the one which is orange and yellow in the top center.

I was wondering, are you supposed to match your tie to your suspenders?

How wide would you say the guys ties are in the two pictures?

2. No. The way I heard it, one should try not to make one's suspenders look too coordinated.
3. Top image; left: 3 3/4'' to 4''. Top right: 4 1/2'' to 4 3/4''. Bottom: 4 3/4'' to 5''. Those are my guesses.
