I retired after 30 years from a large, State psychiatric hospital in western NC. I always wore a coat and tie (and usually a three piece suite) while on the job. On most days at the hospital, for the past 10 or 15 years at least, you couldn't tell the doctors and administrators apart from the patients. and don't even get me started about the psychologist ... I'm also a newbie, even though I joined this forum in 2010! I didn't see this post till today! Anyway, my name is Janine and I live in Australia, and in my early 20's. I can't quite remember how I stumbled upon this website, but it must've been through a fair amount of 1940's google searches! As a kid I used to spend a LOT of time with my grandparents, and they were so cool! Also I used to watch really old school shows on tv (like Felix, Popeye, and even the Little Rascals (from the 20's onwards). I didn't think much of the good ol' eras back then, but there was always something that attracted me to those years. My favourite era is from the 30's-40's. I just love love love that period!

Hi, I used to be a member about 6-7 years ago, but life got in the way of my love for vintage.
I developed severe health problems which left me barely able to move, so I didn't have the money or energy to indulge my love. Then I had two children, the youngest is now 5 months. Now my disability is manageable (mostly) and I'm trying to claw my life back before I'm reduced to just being "mummy" and thought there was only one place to go for advice and style. So I'm back. How is everyone?

Hello everyone! I'm Karin, I live in Stockholm, Sweden and I decided to delurk out of sheer gratitude for the enormous amount of vintage hair knowledge being generously shared over in the Beauty section. Thank you!
I am a seamstress, trying to quit doing it professionally and just do it for the love of making things (and having a nice wardrobe) instead. Much of my everyday wardrobe consists of fitted suits and what would have been considered country wear back in the day. Wool skirts and jackets, sturdy lace-up shoes, tweeds, knit jumpers, simple cotton blouses, felt caps and Tyrolean hats, leather gloves. My main interest is the WWII era and a bit of the postwar period, 1935 to 1950 or so, especially my own country during those years, but I'm interested in history in general and venture outside that period as well. I like reading, especially fiction written in and around my favourite era.
I collect vintage Swedish women's uniforms, both military and civil ones, I play the tenor drum in a small drum and bugle corps where I get to perform wearing some of them, and do a bit of military history stuff in various ways. I'm trying not to collect vintage perfume, but it's slowly amassing anyway, although the last few years I've been focusing more on the uniforms. I like vintage trains, trams and railways, I try to go on trips, visit museum railways and attend things in the vintage rail community as often as I can.
I have several friends who do burlesque, so I end up attending a lot of burlesque events as well, and I enjoy the playfulness, queerness and openminded atmosphere in that scene. Also, I never say no to an opportunity for making odd things to wear and dressing up. Life is short, better drink champagne and wear Schiaparelli-inspired things while you can.

I guess I joined here about a year ago, but I forgot about the site until recently. I'm a writer, in my thirties. Nothing too exciting to say. I don't give myself over fully to the vintage lifestyle, but I do enjoy reading and thinking about lapsed eras. I've been interested in vintage clothing and style since I was a teenager, but, at 5'10", I prefer reproduction clothes to true vintage.
Hello, I'm KLF, I'm 39 years old, married and father of 2 lovely children. I live near Tel-Aviv, in Israel. My interest in vintage surged since I started traditional wet-shaving with a double edge razor, shaving brush and all. I have some family old watches and some vintage radios I hope to restore.

I don't recall how I discovered the Lounge, but after lurking about for a few months I've decided that the time has come for me to step forward and introduce myself.
A New Englander by birth and temperament, I now reside on the southern edges of the mid-Atlantic. The hot and humid summer months are not to my taste, although the gardener in me appreciates the longer growing season.
My love of classic film has evolved into a wider interest in all things related to the 1930s and 1940s. I am excited to find a place full of people with similar interests, and look forward to learning and sharing information and opinions with you.

Good morning!
I found this forum a few days ago while searching for information about girdles. When I do reenacting, I tend to be a good number of decades behind this era, but recently I decided I should start making all of my everyday clothes - and so I might as well make them all or mostly in a 1930s-1960s style, since that's what I like the most, and I'm no longer bound by what the stores offer. I hope to learn a lot about good patterns, hairstyling, etc.!
I've lived in upstate New York for most of my life, but if all goes well I could be midwest-bound. *crosses fingers*

My parents named me William, my Marines named me Doc and I am a raging History addict. It started innocently enough, family trips to historic sites, summer camps at Civil War battlefields, and the occasional museum. Soon there were toy soldiers, military models, and war gaming. Then it was the books, magazines and movies. College came along and I took some form of history class as nearly every elective. As I was studying Engineering & Technology, I trained in mechanical drawing and drafting and fell in love with the Art Deco Movement in design .Things went from bad to worse when I began re-enacting. Initially, it was Civil War as a private in the 3rd Alabama Infantry (that’s right a rebel) then on to WWII as a member of the 501st P.I.R. . I collected vintage pens, antique radios, and old tools.
With help and counseling from places like this I have been able to “control” my habit to a certain degree.
My absolute favorite period of history is the first half of the twentieth century followed very closely by the second half of the nineteenth century. Most interesting are the technological advancements of the 20’sthrough the 40’s and into the 50’s. I am a student of the history of flight including early airliners, the advancement of rail travel and more recently Ocean Liners.
I am working on expanding my knowledge of “real” Ocean liners, not the floating petri dish Vegas Lounges of today. I’m currently building a scale model of the original Queen.
In addition I am expanding my wardrobe to include civilian clothing with my uniforms.
When I’m not living in the past, I am the Fire Marshal for a small city in Southeastern New York. I am also very active in three veterans groups and several scale model groups.

Hello all! I am a returning old member. I wasn't terribly active in the old days, I can't recall my 8 year old username, and nothing linked to my email...don't worry, there was no old drama.
I wear vintage clothing but I also love to wear repro and will defend it to the end. I love wearing real vintage but I have ruined more than my share of garments by trying to wear them at work. I wear 1940s-1960s mostly. Sometimes I have an outfit that is too good to not share, but I feel silly doing so with my friends who don't love vintage. I'm kind of reserved, and I'm 43, so the whole daily/hourly selfie on twitter/facebook fad is lost on me. So I guess that's part of why I'm here - a place to share with like-minded souls.
I also have a vintage home that I am working on (still - purchased in 1999), and I have a borderline-obsession for vintage housewares. I've started collecting swizzle sticks, both contemporary and vintage, for spacial reasons... I can get as out of control as I desire and it still won't take up too much space.
I am a film buff too. I watch a lot of film noir and the French New Wave at home, and I also enjoy seeing vintage films in the theaters. I am lucky to have both the Brattle Theatre and the Harvard Film Archive right in my town.
I'd like to say I read a lot, but I have a house, a family, a monstrous public commute, and a live poker hobby/habit, so much of my free time is spoken for. Right now I am buttressing myself for the coming winter by reading some Dickens-inspired horror novels. For whatever reason they appeal to me in the cold weather.
So I guess that's it! I'll be around. Thanks for existing, Fedora Lounge!

I've been lurking and learning about the lounge for about two months now. I'm 47 and only recently started wearing fedoras - at the same time I discovered the lounge in a google search about "how to wear a fedora" or some such thing. Anyhow, I have to say I've been learning soooo much not only about hats, but men's fashion in general (been a jeans and tee-shirt kinda guy before and I found that for me a collar is a must with a fedora so I've needed to "up" my game in terms of dress), and the care of hats. Also, I love the pictures of members rockin' their hats! It's both inspiring and confidence-building for a nood like me.
So again, hello to all. Normally I agree with Groucho in that any club that would have me as a member I wouldn't want to be a part of, but in this case I'll make an exception if you'll have me cause there's just too dog-gone much for me to learn here.

I have been lurking here for years...yes, YEARS... I know, this is a serious lurking...but my lack of english language skills, my lack of time, and my lack of anything to show that is better than the things that all of you have already shown, and all of them put together, discouraged me to Log In, and I Kept lurking, from the shadows of guest users.
Now, I have not improved my english, neither my looks, but I do have a bit more of time, so I will try to hang around here, and to have some nice chats.
I am 40, I love all things vintage, but I am not a connaiseur. I do not wear vintage, as it is extremely difficult for me to find vintage clothing in my country, due 2 reasons mainly: one, we got the civil war (1936-1939) and then, there were left behind only hunger and poverty, no fancy clothes; and two, I am about twice the height and weight of a regular woman from that time. I love fashions from 1900 (or even early) to 1950 (or even a bit later), but my curvy body feels always better in new look-esque clothes , which is my main aesthetic reference when I am trying to get a vintage look. In adition to vintage fashion, I love too music from back then, and almost anything that is anachronistic, like good manners, fountain pens, and to dance cheek-to-cheek.
Hope we will share some nice soirees.
