It's always great getting a new hat and shaping it! Put on the tea kettle and have at it. Don't be afraid they're nearly indestructable. You can change your crease over and over again. You can't go wrong.

I just bought a mint second hand Akubra military slouch hat at a local thrift store. It came complete with the Australia badge, chinstrap and the brim holder, I removed all the military garniture because I want to turn this hat into a safari style hat. I'm keeping the puggaree and I started to give it a new shape which is more similar to a fedora bash. (For the collectors, no worries, it's not a WWI or WWII vintage hat but rather a new production hat no older than 10 or 15 years max)

How would removing the brim edge protector look? (Not sure how it's called, I'm talking about the fabric strip sewed all around the edge of the brim). Will the edge of the actual brim underneath be all even or did the manufacturer left a rought edge knowing it would be covered by the fabric strip?

I will post pictures in this thread once my project is completed.

You can pop the stitches out and remove the ribbon and see for yourself how the brim edge is.
The only thing that would be somehow visible are the holes where the thread was, unless you consider to trim the brim.

I wouldn't remove the binding but it's not my hat and I can't save them all.

An update with my initial bash - I wanted something reasonable soft and subtle - centre crease and gentle pinch, with the front brim turned down a little. I love the way this hat responds to a little steam - it takes some coaxing to get it to take a shape, but once it sets it's bounces back to set shape very well.

I will let it settle and wear it in for a week or so, and then tweak if I need too.

The bound edge is just decorative. I often get my best scissors and just cut half an inch from the brim right around. Use chalk if you need to draw it out. Then sand it with fine sandpaper to get a smooth raw edge finish. I cut back a lot of wide brimmed hats. Anything over 3 inches looks bloody ridiculous on me. Just under that is perfect. I just cut back a new Cattleman by half an inch. Looks fine.

I have the heritage fawn FED as well . . . a terrific color.

Thanks Mike. It's my only Akubra hat so I can't compare to other Akubra hats in terms of felt softness but I didn't find it difficult to shape at all. It keeps it's shape pretty well too.
