The Allan Quatermain Hat Thread - Where oh where

Whoa - I just re-read this ENTIRE THREAD for kicks only to discover that my name submission was chosen for the hat! Is Art really going to call it "the Bwana?!"

WOO HOO!!!

Now all I have to do is take out a loan and sell my car and I can snag an uber-reproduction of the Granger-Quatermain hat I always wanted to go alongside the uber-Indy Steve made me!

Happy days are here again....

Well, I have just finished the book. Looks like it has been languishing on the shelves for 40 years or so. He only mentions his hat once where he calls it his "shooting hat".

So is this going to be a "Bwana Shooting Hat" (grin).

Thanks MD for bringing the whole thing up, I would never ahave read the original book otherwise. Now I am waiting to see your face under that hat instead of Granger's.

Hey GandyDancer...

Your monicker just reminded me of a party I was at in London a while back with some Indian friends- this bald Indian guy was doing a crazy freak dance and the guests were chanting- 'Go Ghandi- Go Ghandi...'
...guess you had to be there...

Glad you liked the book.

BT.

It actually says that sometimes the wearer had two hats, one stacked inside the other?!

That's weird because, the first time I saw the Granger hat, that is what I thought -- he has two hats on his head.

Wouldn't that be awfully hot? Especially in the jungle?

Maybe I should read H. Ryder Haggard. I saw KSM and saw a weird film in the 60's, with Ursula Andress, called "She," which was also an HRH book.

Any word on Art's prototype yet????? Oh man! This'll be good!

Mike

I spoke to Art and he is out of town. He said the new hat was on the block and he should have it done on Saturday he hopes. The prototype is a 7 3/8.

I think you are getting the first hat!! :) :) :)

In the news

The last I heard the hat body's were in and he was going to make his own hat bands. He is trying to find a scarlet liner for the Bwana hat.

Anyone know any other news?

Thanks, BT! I have been to Lawrance Ordnance in the past, and forgot about that site. Lately I've been turning the web upside down trying to find a WWI wool hatband for my slouch, and it was on a familiar site the whole time. D'oh! Thanks for reminding me! I picked up a band and a new chinstrap, to boot.

And it only took me 6 months to find this thread!

My attempt at creating a safari hat from a slouch hat until I receive my Black Sheep Hatwork piece. I'm not done shaping it and still unsure if I will remove the binding or not.

I'm trying to shape the hat to be something similar to this one

That's a pretty good looking safari hat bellero. Removing the binding will give it a more hardcore bush look if you know what I mean.
The hat in the picture is a nice hat too & I can see why you're using it as a model but you'll have trouble shaping it similar as your hat has a more tapered crown (pariticularly the front) & you'll not get the vertical lines & sharp creases as the one in the pic. You'll need to dip the front of the brim down a little too & slightly off setting the swoop ( so that the lowest part of the dip is off center rather than having it bang in the middle) always seems to give a safari hat that little touch of authenticity.
