John, It is a good book, but, not much on hatting photos.
Those are in fact heel taps. They are still worn by drill instructors on their combat boots to keep the heels from wearing unevenly from all the marching and sharp turns teaching close order drill to recruits (not to mention striking terror into said recruits when heard approaching down a tile floored squad bay).Here's something interesting. It took a few minutes to figure out what these are, but I believe they are probably heels for tap shoes. I haven't looked the brand (Olympic) up yet. Anyone else seen this?
