Hat Brush Color for Stetson Mercury

I just purchased a modern Stetson Mercury graphite fedora from Delmonico Hatters and am wondering , from those who have a Mercury, if I need to buy a light brush or stick with a dark brush? I already have a dark hat brush I use with my Stetson Royal Saxon Midnight and Cordova hats.

Brushing Your Hat

This may sound stupid, but I always get confused on how to properly brush my hats. Could someone explain the correct procedure for a lefty?

Counter clockwise for the sides of the crown and top side of the brim, clockwise for under the brim. Straight back from the front to the back for the crease. Short strokes work best for me. YMMV.

I don't know what your hat looks like but sounds like you know you need a light brush.

What is the difference between a dark and a light brush? I have two dark bushes, one I use on dark color hats the other I use on light color hats.

No difference. Just makes it easier to keep them separate. It's color coding, in a sense.

I've always assumed that there's some concern with spreading sanding dust amongst differently colored hats. If a dark brush is used only on hats having darker shades then the darker sanding dust will only migrate to other dark hats & won't be so noticeable & vice-versa for light-colored brushes being used only for light shades of hats.

Can you imagine spreading some navy sanding dust onto your brand spanking new silverbelly? That would sure make my day!

I use the same hat brush on all of them from black to silverbelly. Never noticed any transfer.

The question is more relevant for shoe collectors - say, to prevent polish transferring from a black pair of shoes to a brush used for tan shoes. But with hat brushes I've never noticed color passing from the bristles themselves to felt....

If I'm rehabing an old dirty hat I'll do short strokes in different directions combined with steam to get a spot or dust off then finish going around the whole hat counterclockwise as others have said.

Yes, as I understood it, it was because of the stuff they spray the hats with. Sometimes the brushes get a bit of color on them and if you use a dark brush on a light hat, a darker shading can be transferred to the hat. If you do dark brushes only on dark hats and light brushes on light hats you would avoid any shading transfer. At least, that is how I understood it.

I still fondly recollect gaining colored fingers from handling a green Stetson Monza which I purchased new a couple years back. It's a nice hat but I wouldn't want to use the same brush on a light hat, esp. on my winter white Biltmore "Capone".
