What would the total to my door cost of importing an eastman jack to the usa be? Say 700gbp for the jacket plus 40 gbp for shipping, what other fees are there and how much roughly

I've only found one import form in my stash of paperwork here - I've thrown all the others out - and it's for a C-3 vest back in 2007 and cost 199 pounds at the time.
So the C-3 was valued at $308 at the time, plus $52.41 in Duty, plus $21.64 in GST (Federal tax), plus $28.86 PST (Provisional tax), plus $8.00 handling fee = $110.91.
So by that rule of thumb, I'd add a third to your calculations for customs.

I can speak with a high degree of knowledge on this subject, as HPA just celebrated 25 years this November importing goods from around the world, and, most specifically, ELC products.

U. S. Customs duty on what is deemed domesticated leather and not exotic leather (horsehide, goatskin, cowhide, sheepskin are all deemed domesticated) is 6%. I believe ELC uses Fed Ex as their shipper for export sales and I believe Fed Ex charges a fee of $25 per shipment to act as your customs broker (whatever carrier is used, you will be charged a fee for them to process the transaction).

The conversion rate U. S. Customs employs to determine the value of a shipment declared in foreign currency (all imports must list the value in foreign currency related to the country in which the sale is made) is determined only twice per year, so what we (and everyone else in the USA) are currently paying in duty on shipments from England, Japan, etc. is not the prevailing rate at which the last trade was made the day prior but is a rate that was determined back in the summer of 2014, and the next rate valuation change will be in January 2015, which will remain in force for 6 months.

So, if you purchase a leather jacket @ 700 GBP and have shipping @ 40 GBP, thus 740 GBP in total, you then need to know what exchange rate you will be paying. If the item is in stock, you could ask ELC to charge your CC immediately and lock you in on that day's rate, and you can also do this if the item isn't in stock; otherwise, the exchange rate you pay will be unknown until the day your item is charged at some future point in time. Predicated on the seesaw ride the dollar has been on with the GBP these last four months, the number could be 1.55/1USD to about 1.70GBP/1USD. If we can assume for the moment that the exchange rate will be 1.60/1USD, then $1, 288.40 is the amount of the conversion. You will then be assessed a currency-conversion fee of 3% on this amount by your credit card bank, so that's another $36.85, thus a total of $1, 265.25.

U. S. Customs will base their 6% on 700 GBP converted @ 1.69 GBP/1USD, which reflects the date in July when this rate was set, so $1, 183 x 6% = $70.98 in customs duty, plus the shipper's processing fee - you should contact them to confirm what this will be but I'm using $25.00 based on my experience.

If we put all of the above into a blender, the resultant cocktail is $1, 421.23 for the final jacket cost, which incorporates a total of $132.83 in various fees.

And if there is an issue with fit or some little detail you just don't like, return shipping and insurance to the UK is on you. ELC insists returns be made using USPS, so you'll have lots of fun filing a reclaim of duty with Fed Ex so your replacement jacket isn't charged duty or even if you just want a refund.

I don't know what style and size you are after, but HPA's stock is quite good in the most popular sizes and we just received more jackets on Monday, though we surely have some black holes in a few sizes and styles.
