Here's two more fighting for your right to say it :D

The 101st Airborne strike team preparing for the Normandy Invasion jump. Half the team was killed within seven hours' of the drop zone.
If you ever saw the film, The Dirty Dozen, these guys-a renegade bunch within the division-were the chosen twelve. [angel]

Ah, uniforms. One of my top 10 modern regrets. (I think losing proper mass transit, including trains, might be #1)

I've been noticing our local on-foot postal carriers have been slowly losing any semblance of a uniform over the last few years. They're wearing their own clothes more and more with maybe a token US postal hat here and there (which includes a trapper style). But often it's only the bag that clues you into their job.

And there's been a trend where the local fedex or ups is apparently sub contracting for local deliveries, so literally some random looking guy in jeans and a hoodie, driving a station wagon (with not even a slapped-on magnetic sign) will approach the house bearing a package. The first time that happened I must've looked pretty askance as he quickly reassured me he was with FedEx, chuckling at my reaction. Maybe I was subconsciously reaching for the shotgun.

Sue me, but I like and appreciate uniforms on service providers. It clearly clues me in to who you are and what you're doing. And if I were one of them I'd feel the same way. I'd want to feel I earned it and feel part of a team. I don't know, I can't explain it well... But it definitely feels like a loss. Same with police with a black poly polo with POLICE emblazoned on the back 7" high. They look like bouncers, not peace officers. Do we have to be uber casual about everything? I blame Casual Fridays for the slippery slope. lol

UPS is the exception that proves the rule -- they seem to enforce a pretty consistent uniform policy for their drivers, and ours are always sharply turned out. I can even excuse the shorts.

Mail carriers, meanwhile, have been in decline since the USPOD was replaced by the USPS -- it was around then that the letter-carriers stopped wearing ties. Something about privatization encourages laxness.

I also miss the days when baseball umpires wore coats and ties. Especially the many whale-bellied umpires, who look all the more blubbery in polo shirts.

On the Virgin America flight I took to Orlando there were two female flight attendants and a male. The male flight attendant was wearing what looked like a hoodie type top with the only thing identifying him as a flight attendant was his flight attendant wings. In fact I thought he was another passenger at first! :p

I rarely go to the malls, but last time I went , the people were, on the whole,
"dressed" as if they just got out of bed with no thought to how they looked. I miss the days when
people took care on how they dressed when going out in public. But on the other hand...Al Capone
always looked "spiffy" out in public ....:D...

2jakes, I've been trying to figure out why I see nothing when you post... It finally hit me!

I use the "Default Style" for viewing the website, rather than the "Blackend" style. You type in the same pale color as the background of the default style so your posts appear blank! I've had to switch to the black background to see what your posts say. :cool3: Secret writing, eh?

Excuse me, my Dear...but the black facade makes for a nice & cozy mood of
a peaceful living room, lights dim with just the fireplace & a warm cup of whatever helps to make it
through the evening with friends...

PM sent. You will notice that the best of the best are on
the list. I am indeed a lucky fellow... :)

Long Beach California, 1952. Home movies of Beany's Drive In restaurant. Notice that everyone looks well behaved, clean and neatly dressed, even for take out hamburgers. There is no litter or graffiti. All the cars are clean and polished except for a couple of prewar jobs. You can get a cheeseburger, fries and coke for 45 cents.

Were the fifties really so bad?
