Akubras en masse

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha.....sorry, I can hardly control myself,
After having found a rather mangled Akubra, a week ago, I activated a search robot and today it announced FOUR New Akubras, which I bought for 160$, in a country where ONE costs 280$.
Just 10 days after I "discovered" Akubra, I'm now the owner of 5 hats! And I only wanted one.
Luckily there are 2 Plainsman, one in size 61cm, which I am going to sell, but how to select between the others? Ah, what a luxury problem

2 of them still have the Australian price tab and only the Snowy has been lightly used but needs a little correction of the crown maybe also a slight correction to the brim.
2 Plainsman, 1 Cattleman, 1 Snowy.

" how to select between the others?" Of course you don't! Unless they don't fit I'd keep them all. Once you go down the slippery slope of a second hat you're hooked. More will follow, don't fight it, embrace it.

Sounds like you got four sweet hats for a hell of a deal. Keep as many as you like, better yet keep them all. You never know when you will want to change your look, style or accidently loose one. I have quite the collection and would not want to get rid of any of them. Wear them in good health.

Great job! I found myself in a similar situation in late November/early December.

I never owned a "real" hat other than 70 or so ballcaps and three wool crusher hat. I decided I really wanted an "Australian" hat, so the search was on.

I stalked Akubras on eBay (after discovering what they were) and in short succession I bought a Cattleman, a Plainsman, and a Coober Pedy, all brand-new. I reshaped the Plainsman to look like the Cattleman and kept it as it is a lighter brown in color.

The Cattleman is the same as yours and the Coober Pedy is light gray, which goes great with the blue Opal in the hatband.

And I got a smoking deal on all three, so low I do not want to post the prices for fear it will keep people from buying them from dealers. Perhaps I got lucky, but I also stalked them and then pounced in the last minute and ten seconds or so. Worked like a charm.

I liked the Cattleman so much that I bought one in Sand from Australia last month. It is the only one I paid a normal amount for.

I'll post pictures of them tomorrow.

Your COOBER PEDY

........................and the Coober Pedy is light gray, which goes great with the blue Opal in the hatband.

G'day, can U please post a picture of your COOBER PEDY showing the opal in the hat band, I bought one (original) but it didn't have an opal. I'm just wondering if some-one didn't lift it. Thanks & cheers.

My hats had been stored on the brim and even stacked inside each other, så especially the brims were out of shape. I tried shaping them cold, then with steam by hand, but didn't succeed very well.
I then propped them up, in the shape I want them, started my campingstove with water in the kettle, placed a plastic tube in the spout and steamed my hats, where I thought it necessary and left them to cool and now I succeeded. Now they again have the right shape and keep it.
I am however surprised at how stiff they are and wonder if they will conform to my headshape(a bit more square than the standard shape) or will I have to shape them exactly after my head, so they'll be more comfortable to wear?

I also expected to be able to use them for everyday use and also in the rain but if I have to do this shaping regularly, It'll be rather bothersome. Do people have a "template" or mold for their hats, so you just drop it in there and let it dry?

Heating good fur felt with steam reactivates the shellac so they stiffen as they cool and dry. This is why it is best to let them cool and dry in place on your head so the hat takes your shape in the stiffened form.

However, as you wear the hat, it will eventually take the shape of your head again.

It is standard from some vendors such as Everything Australian, but is not shown in ads from others.

In my opinion, it looks best on the BlueGrass as shown in Post #9.

What do you think about this? I just put the opal behind the band of my Snowy, to see how it looks. If I go ahead with it, I'll have to find a way of fixing it to the hat.

My hats are worn very frequently and the better ones fall into my shape quickly - especially Akubras. There are places which can custom shape a hat former (a web search can locate some) or you can take a belt sander to a hat stretcher to custom form your own...
I simply use the original - wear it til it dries if at all possible.

After reviewing the Everything Austrailian Coober Pedy page again for a color similar to what you posted above, I noticed that the Regency Fawn is one color option. After looking up photos of that color and reading Dean's comments, this might be the Coober Pedy for me...

You people are causing me no end of grief with the beautiful and wonderful woman of the house...

I ground down my stretcher to better fit my "pointy" forehead. I have an extra long egg oval. I rarely have to use it but it works pretty well when I do. Your hat should "remember" your head shape fairly well on its own as long as it isn't disturbed too much while drying. Try hanging it to dry or lay it upside down. If you rest it on its brim while wet it will distort the brim as well as the head shape.

Just wear your hat and it will fit you head better with time.
As for the brim thing just sit it on its crown when not wearing it.
