Its been a busy winter but I squeezed in a couple for myself. Not the sexist of shapes but they fit my 10.5 3E feet.

I need some advice. I dug my wife's Grandfather's dress shoes out of the bottom of the his closet and they were growing some funk! Mold I would guess. I used water and wiped them down, but don't know where to go from here. They are Allen Edmonds Nassau (shark?). What should I use to clean these and then how should they be conditioned and polished? Is there a FAQ?

Thanks,

Bob

Unique find. Compared to some cowboy boots I have and have owned, looks like shark to me. I use a small amount of Ivory dish soap and warm water to clean inside and out, then wipe down with a clean water rinse. Once dry, I use Bickmore 4 conditioner, inside and out. It's really good stuff. Others here may offer varying opinions.

The linings of these shoes look especially dark and this may be typical staining of older shoes or what could be "red rot", the color leather takes on before it turns to dust. So be careful, if the lining flakes off with a fingernail scrape, you may want to just lightly condition them and put on display.

You can use a mixture of water and rubbing achohol spray on the shoes, use a really soft cloth to wipe and can do the same on the inside. Not knowing exactly how bad off those may be, really need to be gentle with them until you finish cleaning and conditioning. Bick4 is good, it is the same thing as Caddilac as that is who makes the conditionr. Soak those inside allowing the conditioner to get worked all around the entire inner shoe, then do the same for the outsides. Remember the shoes took time to get "funky" and it will take them some time to clean up and then soak for a conditioner to restore the leather (if possible).

Bamaboots and LuvMyMan -- thanks for the advice. I will pick up some Bick4 or Cadillac ASAP.

If it is leather, conditioner is it's best friend. Even suede can be conditioned from the back side of it, but just a small thin amount on the suede at a time.

Here's my latest acquisition: 1940s Stetson Alligator and Suede Spectators.

Fabulous. I would give the suede a good brush and then some suede cleaner. The croc/gator could get some Reptan or a drop of Cadillac Crème but does not look dry. Maybe some Caddy applied inside the shoes on the underside of the suede and round heel area. What size are they?

Thank you! They had a little dryness around the edges in some areas, so I gave them a little cadillac and it cleared that up easily. They're size 11.5 C.
