Mitchell, as one who last attended prom in the mid 70's, (think pastels or any color in the crayon box other than black) I'm hardly qualified to comment on white tie apparel. There are a number on this forum who can comment on vintage white tie.
For what it's worth, if it fits well and you are comfortable wearing it and your date likes it, it will look great.
The jacket and waist coat look to fit you well and you look quite sharp. Hard to tell about the pants in your posted photo. I would also say you are likely to be the only one there dressed in such a fine suit. Always a good thing, IMHO.

Couldn't agree more.
I actually have one. The tails I'm wearing belonged to my great-great Grandfather; i'm told he was a very slight man, unfortunately the hat does not fit.The hat is equally as well preserved as the tails; in fact, it's still in it's original hat box. The hat is about 10 years older than the tails though.

When I was in high school, we had both white and black tie at prom.
As for altering the pants, we'd need to see more pictures, front and back. But as long as they're not falling down and you don't have a lot of pooling in the rear on the legs, you should be okay. Maybe take up or let down the hems if you need to.

I think it's a cultural thing... It's been going on here in the states for 70-80+ years.
Prom is basically what you describe. The dress code is generally Semi-Formal (Black Tie) and is usually for the Juniors and Seniors (but many smaller schools don't limit by grade/class).
At my high school, dinner was not provided, and you took your date out to a nice dinner prior to the dance.

What Brendanm720 said is, basically, standard operating procedure. I'm gearing up for my prom, too. However, at my school, prom is exclusively for seniors, unless invited by a senior. There's not gonna be a dinner, but I'm betting there will be drinks and light snacks.
Mitchell, those are some slick digs, man! And they were heirlooms, so it probably didn't cost you a thing! No such luck for me, my father doesn't wear tuxedos, and I don't have any grandparent or extended family living in the same city as me. So, I had to shell out $135 on a vintage '40s tux I saw online. It comes in on Monday, I'll have to post some photos once it gets here.
